About

Penumbra Overture is a survival horror game developed by Frictional Games.

In the year 2001, after his mother's death, Phillip receives a message from his father who left the family and was supposedly dead. The letter leads Phillip to Greenland where he finds a mine his father wrote about. During the descent into the mine, the ladder breaks down. Phillip has to find another way out.

The game's world is highly interactive thanks to an advanced physics engine. Players are able to move the in-game objects by moving the mouse instead of just clicking on them. For example, in order to pull a door, the player has to click on the handle and pull the mouse towards themselves. There are no firearms in Penumbra, so Phillip has to fight the enemies off using mining equipment. It is better to evade any conflict rather than getting into a fight. Phillip can stick to the shadows to hide from the enemies, barricade doors or trap his enemies in the cages.

During gameplay, the player has to find clues on how to complete a certain puzzle. For example, when Phillip has to make a bomb, the players have to consult the explosives manual, find the ingredients and mix them together.

Penumbra Overture reviews and comments

It's still after 6 years of knowing this game my top favorite horror game of all time and one of the best game series for me. I don't know what it is with this game, I love everything about this series, the soundtrack, the weird controls, the story and the ♥♥♥♥ing AMAZING atmosphere. Recommend this game series for every horror game player who don't like jumpscares a lot but love atmosphere and survival aspects.

I really like this type of games, I enjoyed amnesia or soma... But here alas, I did not manage to "franciser" the game. It works normally in French with a patch... that I have not managed to find... Not to play in englais... for this reason I do not recommend this game if you are not completely bilingual... Because spending time trying to translate the clues it becomes very quickly unbearable and completely breaks the mood...

an excelent game, I just started it and I love, a great atmosphere, correct graphics for the era (2007), a story of crazy, in the same lineage as amnesia the dark descent, really I highly recommend it, even if the game is in English, French patch exists to play in French integral, here is the link to download it: http://ubuntuone.com/p/2mN/and to install it (copy the download file and paste it into): steam/Steamapps/common/Penumbra Overture/Redist/config

Clearly the ancestor of amnesia at all points of view: gameplay not really to the point, especially when it comes to manipulating objects, the story takes a tremendous amount of time to really start (only at the end), a lot of bugs, which can sometimes prevent the progression, the enemies, in number of two, are absolutely not stressful (especially since they can be easily killed)... In short, game not terrible in itself, often frustrating, and that barely make you want to continue, but it lays the foundations of the second part that is clearly better.

I acquired the game through a promo, including all the Penumbra and amnesia (as far as saying that it almost cost me nothing). We are here between survival horror and the classic "point and click" with puzzles to solve not always obvious. Even if the game has more than 10 years, the modeling and graphics are very correct. On the other hand, level playability, I would have preferred the full support of the gamepad because the keyboard/mouse combo is really not my forte! The app asked me a little more than 8 hours to be completed and I remain on my hunger because the questions that arise do not necessarily find an answer once the game is over. I think I'll know more with the black plague suite.
