About

The Long Dark is a game about surviving in the unforgiving conditions of frozen North Canadian taiga. The Arctic wilderness may be breathtakingly beautiful, thanks to the game’s artful visual style, but it is also deadly. Low temperatures, hungry animals like wolves and bears, and starvation can easily kill your character. To stay alive, he will need to learn how to light a campfire, find shelter, care about his wounds, hunt for food and protect himself in an unfriendly environment. Many necessary items in the game, including some of the weapons, need to be crafted out of the junk that you can find in the woods and in abandoned buildings.
In the story mode, called Wintermute, you control a pilot, Will Mackenzie, who was hired by his ex-wife Astrid to deliver a mysterious cargo. Eventually, his plane crashed in the woods. Will is injured, and Astrid is missing, presumably lost somewhere in the wilderness. Your goal is to survive and to rescue your companion. Wintermute follows a linear plot and only allows you to explore a limited area. However, it is recommended to start with, since it serves as a sort of tutorial to the open-world sandbox mode. This is the most popular mode, in which you are not confined to the plot and can discover new areas.

The Long Dark reviews and comments

The Long Dark is a survival game from Hinterland Studio Inc. that does not have a Zombie Apocalypse. Cold Nights, long and fraught with Danger. Not only the Animals but also the Weather has conspired against you! Story In Addition to survival mode (see Gameplay), in which you are the only Survivor in a World of Ice and Snow, there is also the story mode, which tells the Stories of William Mackenzie and his Ex-wife Astrid. I don't want to tell you much about it, if you're interested in the Story of the two of them then the Game either plays itself or watches a Let's Play on it. Just roughly the Beginning: Astrid Seeks out Bush pilot William with the urgent Request to take her to an Island on his Plane. With her, she carries a Suitcase about its Contents, but it is important enough for her To risk her life for it. A Storm rages around the Island and the Flight ends as suddenly strange Lights light up the nighttime sky and all Electronics fail, with a Crash landing in the Mountains. When you wake up, in the Guise of William MacKenzie, Astrid is already gone and you are hurt and undercooled. This is where the Tutorial begins, slowly bringing you closer to the most important Mechanics, Values and Objects. Gameplay When you start survival mode you have the Choice of five different Modes: Pilgrim Traveller Schleicher Intruder and Custom Pilgrim Is the easiest Mode, well suited to familiarize yourself with the Game. The Weather is still merciless and moody, but at least the Wolves and Bears don't want to get to your Collar anymore. At least, as long as you don't get too close to them. The Difficulty and the Aggressiveness of the Animals increases in the individual Modes. If you can drive a Wolf out by a nasty glance alone in pilgrim Mode, in intruder mode the Crows are already circling above your Head and the Bear is already licking its Lips around the next Corner. The big Goal of the Game is survival for as long as you can! To do this, you need to keep your Character warm and Provide it with enough Water and food, braving Weather and Wildlife. Find Food left behind or go foraging With found Or home-built weapons. Quarry into abandoned Houses or Caves, go ice fish and collect Herbs for Medicine. But keep an eye on the Weather! Fog and dense Snow can bring you fast Death as well as the Teeth of the Wolves ... In addition, you have five crisp Challenges and all sorts of playable Badges that give you different Bonuses in Survival Mode. I recommend you either play the Beginning of the Story and with it the Tutorial, or take a Look at the keyboard assignment before venturing into the North Canadian-looking Wilderness. Graphics & Sound The Characters, Objects, Animals and the Landscape look like they are painted. I really like this Style. The Animal sounds sound believable and the Music fits well into this cool World, it is partly melancholy and gloomy, underlining well different Events without annoying or too much distracting from the Surroundings. The First Movie of the story mode was already pretty to watch, but the Movie to kick off the second Part really surprised me! A good Piece Of music that wonderfully underscores the Mood of the Film and tunes in to the second Part of the Story. Verdict I recommend this Game. For anyone who wants to try their hand at a survival game but doesn't have a buck at roll of Wool Zombies. It's Fun, demanding but not unfair. It has its little Quirks and Logic flaws, but a Lot of Charm and Replay Value, because, how long will you survive? And can you still top that? What undiscovered and secret Places will you find the next Attempt? Did you like the Review and/or help? Then follow our Review Program! And write calmly in the Comments if you want to tell me something about this Review.

The single-player mode is awful. It’s bugged, like when the game wants me to avoid the wolf but doesn’t let me do it (WTF, really) and I die and die again. It’s not the only broken section but this wolf problem pissed me off. I don’t like graphics either, there is no multitask, so you can do only one thing at a time, what is completely useless and irrational when you need to boil water and do something else at the same time. The gameplay in general is not perfect too. Two thing are done great, though: the soundtrack and the survival mode. That’s it - and it’s not enough.
Much better than other survival games now because free of stereotypes. It’s just a man against the wild, without supernatural monsters hiding in the dark. Differents level of difficulty make the game enjoyable for everyone, either you want just to craft something in the woods or go kill all the wolves around. In fact, you can choose what to fight - your own needs or outer threatens.
