Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle review
by Blake Woog

Things I like:
- Jokes
- Grant Kirkhope music
- Well-refined 3D graphics that make denim overalls shiny
- Mario games that remind us that Bowser and Bowser Jr. have a legitimate father/son relationship built on love and respect

I really liked this game, and that surprised me. At the time of writing this I've been putting off playing XCOM 2 for a while because of my fear of how engaging I would find this combat, but I figured after a Fire Emblem game, this is the kind of turn-based I was ready for.

What surprised me the most is the writing. I really liked how Bowser Jr. was written, Beep-O was entertaining and a welcomed comic relief in a sea of Rabbids being Rabbid-funny.

Combat was fun and intuitive, and picking team members was a fun bit of strategy. I went with Peach and Rabbid Peach so I could charge in guns-blazing like I always do, soak up the hits, and heal afterwards. The movement is fun and I was alright at it, but I really started to use it to its full potential just as the game was ending. It was never too deep that I lost track of the fun.

I liked the different enemy types, but the bosses felt a bit uninspired. I liked the Phantom which was an excellent nod to Conker's Bad Fur Day, but the formula of 'hit it, wait for it to move, now go over there and hit it again' wasn't the most fun for me. The mid-bosses were infinitely more exciting than the true bosses.

The post-game also wasn't all that enticing to me, as retracing my steps seemed a bit boring and the challenges no longer really had anything to build to, save a 100% completion status.

Overall, a really fun game. I'd definitely play a sequel or the DLC, and I'd recommend it to people as well. It's nice to see passion projects like this pan out.

9/10 - Very fun, if you love the XCOM franchise and Mario(and Rabbids....why not?) this is your game!

A standout game for the Switch. Very few games fit their console as well as this. X-COM with a Mario twist that gets hard sooner than you expect.
