A Reaper's Mercy

In this world, Reapers guide the souls of the dead to their appropriate afterlife, based on their religious beliefs. Gerard, a reaper of undisclosed pantheon soon realizes that people are vanishing from Earth at an alarming rate, with no judgement and no determination of which pantheon they follow. 

Unable to stand by and let this happen, Gerard does what no Reaper has ever dared do, release the souls of those that received no judgement. He stands against the might of the entire afterlife, and as such must use all his Reaper powers, such as devouring souls to gain their abilities and recruit others to his side.

What is the mystery behind what is happening, and can Gerard put an end to it?
