Apotheon reviews

Sadly doesn't have a lot going on beyond the very beautiful artstyle
Looks fantastic, plays mid at best
This is a good sidescroller with a great art style. It isn't too long or difficult to get the hang of. What I had trouble with is how it controls on consoles. When you try to arc your attacks or aim your ranged weapons it just doesn't work great on consoles and it really feels like it would be much better on PC. There is also the issue of getting launched all over the screen in some encounters which can make it pretty jarring. Half the time I found blocking didn't do much because the enemy clipped through my shield to attack me. Aside from that I enjoyed it. I think the art is it's greatest feature.

It hurts my heart a little, but I can't recommend Apotheon. This is not a bad game, otherwise I would have stopped playing it much sooner but I could not finish it either. I really like the artistic style and you have to admit that few games are based on Greek mythology. Boss fights are pretty well thought out and original. The level design does not seem very good and makes me say that a linear level would not be that bad. When in combat, if initially it seems rather well thought it presents major flaws. There is a good variety of weapons available but it is useless to attach to one of them because with the shield all degrade very quickly and become unusable. Can't fix them. So we have to find others or go back to the market to get new faces the enemies brings almost nothing, apart from seeing his equipment to degrade and his life gauge drop. Before I stopped playing, I was not even trying to confront them, I was running by ignoring them... If Alientrap does a sequel or game in the same vein with an improved combat system, I'll be happy to try it. For now I can only suggest to play Guacamelee instead. Edit: corrected faults.

Apotheon can be called "metroidvania", but its qualities make it a game that stands out from most games that mix RPG, platform and action. I was personally attracted to this game both by its exceptional graphic quality, which will charm all lovers of ancient history and Greek mythology (it takes over the artistic style Dorian), and by the originality of its gameplay. 1) it is clear that the artistic direction has been very pleased in the realization of this game: the graphics as the music are of a high quality; the decorations are varied, the lively music, and all the characters, from Nikandreos to the small citizens of the Agora and the Acropolis, are remarkably worked and detailed. In short, this game is very charming by its shape! 2) the gameplay is very complete: the great diversity of weapons, potions, elixirs and various "heroic" attributes allow the player to adopt various tactics against the different challenges offered by the gods. One would prefer, for example, to use his bow, sling or sarissa to keep the enemy at Bay, his dagger to assassinate the enemy from behind or his mass to get into the heap! You also have to learn to master the shield so you don't take too many shots. But the diversity of weapons induces a relatively embarrassing flaw in the game. Indeed, the very many weapons are all used according to specific goals (hitting the head, hitting the body, hitting from afar, etc.), which induces a long grasp of the gameplay, sometimes laborious. 3) the scenario is well-tied, the representations of the gods are faithful and the progression of the player is accompanied by excerpts of great ancient works (La Théogonie of Hesiod, the Odysée, works of Esope, etc.). In this, any lover of mythology and legendary Greek tales will be delighted! 4) the difficulty of the game is well dosed and going growing. Some passages will give you a lot of trouble, and the replayability, for the more daring, is at the rendezvous: three levels of difficulty are proposed, and finish the game in difficulty Olympian will ask you a lot of patience and cold blood when several passages... 5) I would like to salute the work of the entire community of Apotheon players, their artworks are really pleasant to admire! In short, for fans of metroidvania, beat-'em-all or "difficult" games, I highly recommend you to buy the game!
