Feist (Riftwar). Published in 1993 by Sierra on-line, this classic is celebrating 25 years of existence today. Little known to current players because of its great age and its largely outdated graphics, this is yet one of the most striking role-playing games of the last decades. Few playful works can boast of offering such a detailed universe, such original mechanics and a catchy narrative. Betrayal at Krondor presents a war-torn universe, inhabited by rich characters and carried by a finely woven plot. Each chapter offers a different selection of characters, such as a young amateur magician, for example, or an unsympathetic Elf hated by all. The narrative reveals itself through the viewpoints of these diverse groups, some of whom sometimes come from one chapter to another. Turn-based combat takes place on a simple but functional tactical grid, and the characters evolve not by gaining experience levels, but by developing mastery of their different abilities. At any time, the player can select a certain number of statistics for each of his characters, and these statistics will be developed as a priority over the actions performed. For example, it is possible to emphasize the combat to the body-to-body, the endurance and repair of the equipment, or even on the magic, the trade and the lockpicking of locks. Mastering these areas will develop faster for the character in question, but all of its statistics will also continue to evolve, albeit more slowly. The system recalls the one borrowed by the Elder Scrolls and allows the player to manipulate the progression of his characters in a very satisfactory way. There is even a talent called "Barding", which allows the player to raise money in the passing hostels by offering an artistic performance, the result of which will be improved by the musical instruments in his possession... provided, of course, not to scare the public away! One of the most unique aspects of betrayal at Krondor is the presence of a vast amount of "Wordlock chests", safes locked by puzzles and scattered throughout the game universe. These puzzles are written in an ancient language, which only a few characters have the ability to translate. The discovery and opening of these chests is one of the greatest pleasures of the game and allows the player to get their hands on unique objects, new spells or even elements essential to the progression of the narrative. Under arid outdoors and an antique Visual hides thus a unique and highly satisfying experience. The vast world and the sometimes brutal difficulty can be disconcerting at first glance, but the players who dare to face the experience will discover one of the most enchanting game worlds that have been designed to date. + Atmosphere, universe and engaging narrative + flexible and detailed RPG mechanics + simple, efficient and demanding tactical combat + huge universe filled with puzzles and secrets – graphics, interface and animations exceeded (and by far) EXCELLENT if you Search: + a finely detailed universe + a memorable role play to avoid if you are looking for: – a simple to cross game – a modern Visual 9.5/10 Shnapenn's choice 2013
