About

Breathe Heart ou le Syndrome de dioxygène

Help an underwater diver to find his way in multi-layer levels in isometric 3D.

There is a twist (or two), though:

  1. His heart rate is connected to the way doors operate;
  2. He can use his dioxygen supplies to move one level up, and also to decrease his heart rate.

You will stumble upon heart-rate-controlled doors, dioxygen-controlled doors and electric eels; you will have to use some brains and (heart) muscle to get through this alive.

A literally immersive multi-layer puzzle game with an emotional suffocating underwater diver and his beating door-opening heart.

Features

  • Isometric 3D with several storeys, wide zooming options and transparency for better viewing comfort.
  • Automatically saves your progress and lets you choose your level at your next session.
  • Fullscreen / Windowed mode support. [still some minor bugs]
Planned
  • More creatures (at least sharks that can frighten the diver and jellyfish with some randomised AI).
  • More tutorial support.
  • Better visuals, including orientation, animation and clearer UI (especially for the hearts).
  • Maybe allowing the player to turn the camera (90°) and slide the spacing between storeys.
  • Music, and more sounds to better get the action.
  • And of course, many more levels. (I managed to create them fast, but I guess a homebrew editor would help going faster and more safely; the puzzle design side may also need extra attention on my part.)

Note:  it should be considered as a prototype. This is a work in progress, but I think the foundation is here; I could design the three levels very quickly (in a matter of dozens of minutes) once I was finished with the heavy groundwork.
WARNING: may (entirely) contain fine egregious programmer art design. Viewer discretion is advised. (Actually, I have asked some people, and it turns out they did not think the game to be ugly. I don’t either, to be frank, I think it is cute. :))

Animations are also not yet implemented; take it as a homage to Civilization II.

Creation context

Made for Mini Jam 109 with theme ‘Depth(s)’ and limitation ‘Health Is A Tool’. (Running time: from June 24th 2022 at 6:00 AM to June 27th 2022 at 6:00 AM.)

Epilogue: unfortunately, the prototype was ready at the last minute before the end of the… votes. The game is thus not marked and stays unranked. I would be interested in your feedback, though, so you can leave a message over there, or even how you would have marked the game (considering the three levels from the first version) if you had had your say over the matter. I was very disappointed to have missed this opportunity by only some days, in my second Game Jam…
Anyway, I am happy with what I have achieved; this may turn into a complete game. I like how it looks (especially the submarine feel associated with the permanent distorsion), how it should play after some gauge parameter tweakings, and it was also the occasion of reusing some programming experience from
La Faim d’Elvis and extend it (especially collisions). :) And this one may in turn be useful for a part of a greater project of mine (which should be called Terminal, in case you are curious).
