About

Explore the worlds of Californium, a first person exploration game where you are a writer trapped into shifting realities. Will you find what’s behind the simulacra ?

Berkeley, 1967. You are Elvin Green, a writer whose career is not better than his sentimental life. Besides, the day starts badly : your wife Thea left you a break up letter. As for Eddy, your editor, he summons you : "you are a writer who does not write" - you should find yourself another editor. Your world is falling apart. Too much acid and cheap booze ? Too many sleepless nights stuck to your typewriter, powerless to tackle your first novel ? Your poor mental health is collapsing. Luckily this nightmarish world is unstable, you can extract yourself from it and thus access another reality! You have nothing to lose!

Californium reviews and comments

Californium is an extremely fascinating and surrealist Puzzle game, with a Clear focus on philosophical and exestential Questions. At Its core, the Story is about a Writer who, after being abandoned by his Girlfriend, escapes into abstract worlds corresponding to his own abstruse ideas to process this. In order to get ahead of the Game, the Player must solve simple But sometimes well-hidden Puzzles, all of which correspond roughly to the same Scheme. Each Level consists of smaller Areas, which are now considered to be a puzzle with several Puzzle Pieces to be solved (It is always obvious how many Puzzle pieces a Puzzle Has). After that, according to the same Scheme in the City itself, a Puzzle consisting of several Parts must be solved in order to get into the next Section of the Game. The Game time is quite short (about 3h) and you always come across smaller Bugs here and there, which mainly affect the Sound. You can play the Game with Mouse & Keyboard as well as with Controllers, whereby the Controller Control is very hairy and inaccurate, which is why Mouse & Keyboard should be the first Choice here. Graphically, the rather pretty 3D world is strongly in comic style and offers pretty cool morph effects when the Protagonist Solves individual Rätzle Parts. All NPCs are 2D and have no Animations, which is not necessarily negative, as Here the focus is clearly on the fairly good and immersive Syncron speakers and the Narrative of the actual Story. If you are interested in unique, quiet and narrative Games, you can access here without any consideration. The Game principle is very simple and designed more for the Narrative and the Experience as such than on the Puzzles or action-packed Game Elements.

I recommend this game, Yep, just that. What I liked: the melcholic and sad atmosphere, the psychopathic side drugged the character, the immersion in different worlds and yet all connected, the references to the universe of PKD, the character design with this side cardboard 2D paste that sounds fake, the quality of the dubbing (awesome!), the puzzles not so simple (I have struggled 7 hours...), the story and the decorations. What I liked less: in the first chapter a bug forced me to restart everything (a riddle that does not appear in the Editor's Office), but it worked afterwards. Still some problems of clipping and lighting, the finesse of the video settings (there is way to do much more beautiful and fine without doing it in unreal 3), the life of the game a little lean for the price. Why (and who) I recommend the game: this game perfectly puts in an atmosphere created for the occasion, from the universe of the writer PKD. It's rather a slow-acting puzzle game. It possesses a profound meaning (like the works of PKD) on the perception of reality, manipulation/conspiracies, alternative realities, depression, human relations, human nature and also it must be said: alienation, use of drugs and alcohol, mental illnesses. This game is recommended to fans of Philip K. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ (no need to have read all his work, even if I recommend it) this game is recommended to those who appreciate the small independent UFOs, unclassifiable, to the limit of the concept this game is recommended to amateurs of universes and distorted realities this game is recommended to people who support/are interested in the French gaming industry (cocorico!) This game is not recommended to players who like pure action, and who do not like the times dead in the narration, the puzzles. This game is not recommended to the allergies of SF, the Cartesian borned, people who have only 3 FPS in their media library (and all DLCs) this game is not recommended to those who take drugs and who are in full descent. That's. Good night, and good luck.
