About

DerDieDas Auto

Ein Spiel zum Trainieren der Geschlechter (und Artikel) der deutschen Substantive.

A game for training the genders (and articles) of German substantives.

You can choose between 10 themes, each with 100 substantives, 2 modes of playing:

  1. Classic - where you select the article for a given substantive
  2. Reversed - where you select substantives for a given article

There is also a "Slow mode", that halves the speed and the points gained.

Use WASD or arrow keys or mouse or touch input for controls.

Singular form is preferred when answering, but some words are in the plural form.

How do you know if it is a masculine word or feminine in German

There are some tricks for knowing whether it should have der (masculine), die (feminine) or das (neuter) in front of it, but most of them you will have to learn!

For masculine words:

  • The names of the days, e.g. der Sonntag (= the Sunday)
  • The names of the months, e.g. der März (= March)

  • Names of car brands, e.g. der Audi (= the Audi)
  • Words ending in -er, e.g. der Lehrer (= the teacher)
  • Words ending in -ismus, e.g. der Kapitalismus (= the capitalism)
For feminine words:
  • Animals of the female gender, e.g. die Kuh (= the cow)
  • Words ending in -schaft, e.g. die Eigenschaft (= the property)
  • Words ending in -ei, e.g. die Fischerei (= the fishery)
  • Words ending in -heit, e.g. die Gelegenheit (= the occasion)
  • Words ending in -ung, e.g. die Vorstellug (= the performance)
  • Words ending in -keit, e.g. die Richtigkeit (= the correctness)
  • Words ending in -ion, e.g. die Tradition (= the tradition)
  • Words ending in -ität, e.g. die Universität (= the university)
  • Names of trees, e.g. die Birke (= the birch)
  • Names of flowers, e.g. die Rose (= the rose)
  • Many (but not all) words that end in an -e, e.g. die Frage (= the question)
  • Names of numbers, e.g. die Eins (= the one)
  • Most German rivers, e.g. die Donau (= the Danube)
For neuter words:
  • Whole verbs used as nouns, e.g. das Denken (= to think)
  • Words ending in -chen or -lein  are diminutives, e.g. das Löffelchen (= the spoon)
  • Words ending in -ial, e.g. das Potenzial (= the potential)
  • The colors, e.g. das Rot (= the red)
  • Words beginning with Ge and ending with an -e, e.g. das Gebäude (= the building)
  • The names of letters, e.g. das A (= the A)
