Review
Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a solid, complete RPG that gets the essentials right without reinventing anything. Media.Vision replaces the old random encounters with visible symbol encounters, giving far more control over pacing, and adds a genuinely useful auto-battle option for lighter fights and farming without sacrificing depth in boss encounters. Over 450 collectible Digimon and a satisfying digivolution system give the collection loop real weight, and light action-adventure segments with mini-puzzles keep the pacing varied between battles.
The one real knock: it lacks a strong, distinctive identity. It ticks every box expected of a creature-collector RPG without ever truly surprising you. But context matters here — measured against recent Pokémon environments and designs, Time Stranger absolutely holds its own, and the digivolution system remains something genuinely satisfying that has no direct equivalent elsewhere.
Also worth noting: this is the first Digimon Story entry with full English voice acting and translation into 11 languages including French, a real step up for the franchise's international ambitions.
A serious, complete, well-executed RPG. Not a genre-definer, but a genuinely good one.
