Collect gems that match your player's colour. Your colour will change after a certain period of time. Gems that do not match your colour will hurt you. Go through the portal to upgrade. Also use escape to pause in game.

You can upgrade after going through a portal. For the upgrades you can make yourself faster, take less damage from different coloured gems, or gain a portion of your health.

Health increases by the same amount each upgrade. However the speed and damage taken upgrades will be smaller each time. This is to avoid you getting ridiculously fast and invulnerable, so after a couple of portals they might not seem like they're doing anything.
