NOTE: The Latest Krita version is always available on Steam FOR ALL KÄUFER in the Betas! All you have to do here is select the relevant Version. The previously available Life-Time Upgrade is no longer required!
This Review was updated on 04.04.2018 and refers to Krita Gemini 4.0!
Krita Gemini is the Steel version Of the open-source Graphics Program Krita, which has been quite long-standing and well-known from the OECD project. In Contrast to the also free and well-known Graphics Program, it is not so strongly designed for Image editing, but rather for digital Painting and offers correspondingly extensive Possibilities for Brush settings. Accordingly, use with Graphic Tablet Is also recommended.
There are Mirror Axes, a Free-to-rotate drawing surface, a kaleidoscope tool ("Multi Brush"), extensive stabilizer functions for the Brushes, Possibilities for soft proofing and much more. Another very interesting Feature is the "Wrap Around Mode," in which the Drawing Surface becomes the "Infinite Texture" (an Area that Repeats Tiled without any recognizable Edges) and can be processed in Real time. Anyone who creates Textures for 3D objects will love this Feature. Fittingly, There are also Brushes and Functions to draw normal maps.
Since version 3.0, extensive Animation Tools for classic Frame-by-Frame Animations have also been included in the Program.
Still, the Question arises: "Why Buy Krita Gemini on Steam when there is also Free ones to Krita as open source software?"
Krita Gemini offers no additional Features or great Advantages over the Version independent of Steam. I just wanted to give the Project some Money, because I have been working with Krita very successfully for several Years.
Originally, Krita Gemini was supposed to have an extra touchscreen surface. Those Plans, however, have been put on Hold for now due to Problems. Whether this Feature will be implemented again in the Program is unclear.
The Main Advantage of the Steam version is actually simply the Ability to change versions quickly and easily, as well as automatic Updates, if they are published on Steam.
Whether you need that, everyone has to decide for themselves.
Krita gets a bigger update about once a year and in between always smaller Bug Fixes and Improvements. Unfortunately, the Linux or Mac version of Krita is not available through Steam and generally the Steam version of this really great program Receives too little Care from the Developers. Here, there doesn't even seem to be more Time for a short Entry in the update news. This very Stepmotherly Treatment of Krita Gemini and the Community on Steam Rightly shines an extremely bad Light on the Program.
Overall, Krita is one of the most important Cross-platform tools for me and also one of my personal favorite graphics programs. It works perfectly with Graphics tablets (I use it with a Wacom CINTIQ 21UX) and offers a lot of useful Features, especially for Illustrators and Cartoonists, as well as a tidy and customizable Interface. Whether you really need the Steam version is up to everyone. Some Of the Money benefits the Project, so you should think of it more as a Donation, less as a Purchase.
In Short, a very powerful and highly recommended Graphics Program for all those who like to paint on the PC.
My Recommendation: If you are unsure or Do not give Valve any Money, you should use krita.org for the free download version and, if necessary, donate some Money there.
