Purgatory reviews

Attention: this evaluation focuses on a game still in development. Xzus, the hero of the game (impossible to rename or choose his sex), Warrior, son of warrior, finds himself in purgatory. He must fight to get out and can die as many times as necessary. In his struggle, units will join him and die for him. In the game, we move on a map, we chain the fights turn-based on fixed screen with fixed screens of presentation. Here everything is basic, but effective. During the fights, there is no automatic attack of response or difference (seems to me) between the blows from front, side or from behind. You automatically get one or two units per battle won and you acquire passive skills and three spells (Yes, just three in the whole game!) through a skill tree. Dilemma: the points to spend on the tree are also those with which we raise our units in level, and all this is expensive... Fortunately, we can grind as much as we want. There is a limit to the number of units that can be won but not to the number of points, so free to us to repeat the same level as many times as we want to earn his precious 5 points. This can make the game repetitive. Let's note that the units, even mounted in level, have only one life. The difficulty is well dosed but is not the one that the high level players are looking for who have finished the heroes of might and magic in high level. It's better to know. This game is intended for the average player. The beginner (or casual player) will have a bit of trouble, though. Technically, it's pixel art mastered, and deliberately "crade". We like it or not, I do. There are not many monsters, but the game is closer to the chess game than might and magic or King's bounty. Getting started is relatively fast and a tutorial should address the uncertainties of the beginning. This is all the more necessary as the game starts in medias RES (through a fight, without explanation). I regret a little that sometimes the highlight colors mingle at the bottom and that the presence of several units side by side makes the visual appearance a bit messy. It's up to you to see if you can overcome this (watch videos to get an idea). Finally, I salute the music which, if it does not have many different tracks, is surprisingly good quality. It evokes the best Japanese music of the years 90. The least impossible to rename or choose the gender of the protagonist; The crashes after a battle; The absence (at the moment) of conclusion when we finish the game; The visibility can be improved in particular because of the highlighted sometimes badly detached from the rest; The more music very searched and melodious, sometimes badarse; Playability; The evolution of the character and the units; The graphic paw, pixel art pretty but a little dross, a bit dirty; The small price. Conclusion if we accept the limits quoted above, this game is an excellent surprise, especially since its price is ridiculously low (you could pay up to 5 euros that would be deserved). It is addictive, the difficulty is gradual but not demented and we want to go further, the battles chained more than we had anticipated, which is good sign. Finally, the developers seem pretty open and ready to improve their game, which is good sign. Without bugs and with the required polishing, this title would go from good to very good. As it is, I give him a big provisional 6/10 and all my encouragement, because he has a good little potential and, with his side "hard", he throws.
