About

Rivals of Aether is a platform fighting game developed and published by Dan Fornace in 2014. The game takes heavy inspiration from the founder series of its genre, Super Smash Bros., and specifically its second entry, Super Smash Bros. Melee. Dan Fornace describes himself as a long-time fan of the Smash Bros. series, being the developer of the 2010 'de-make' fangame Super Smash Land. Like in Smash Bros., instead of a traditional fighting game arena, a game of Rivals of Aether takes place on a stage that could be compared to a platform game level. Instead of a health bar, damage is represented by a percentage. The higher the percentage, the further a player will be knocked back when hit. The goal of the game is to knock other players out of the screen using a varied moveset. Two to four players can take part in the same game, in a free-for-all or a team battle. Rivals of Aether differs from the Smash Bros. series in that, instead of having Smash Bros.' enormous amount of content, it puts heavy focus on its competitive aspect. The game features a tightly balanced roster of 14 characters (including 2 guest characters) and every stage has an unique variation designed for competitive play. The game pulls the roots of its mechanics from the second entry in the Smash Bros. series, Super Smash Bros. Melee, famous for its competitive depth and aggressive gameplay (many advanced techniques from different entries of Super Smash Bros. are present, such as wavedashing, Reverse Aerial Rush or moonwalking, and the game is balanced with them in consideration), and tries to improve on them while cultivating its own original dynamics ; among other things, the classic shield has been replaced with a parry, which can stun opponents if it succeeds, at the risk of a significant recovery period if it doesn't). The game has gathered a decently-sized competitive scene and is ran along with Smash Bros. at various major tournaments such as Genesis or Frostbite, in addition of having its own championship series and other tournament series, primarily in the United States. As all DLC characters for Rivals of Aether have been released, a Definitive Edition of the game is set to release in the future, on PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and potentially PlayStation 4.

Rivals of Aether reviews and comments

Nice game, very cool for playing with a friend. 2 bad things : -8 characters, that's it. All others aren't and won't be free. -2 players maximum. Don't expect to play with 3 friends, pick one of them to play with you, others can go play Melee. I recommand this game because it's a good game. But it's not a good product, b'cause of DLCs and additionnal characters you will never play with (5€ srly ?). The lifetime is not big, unless you love do the same matchs again and again, with your favorite characters. It's hard but it's life.

This game is very well done but balancing is to be reviewed, I watch the different tournament games and the paid characters appear much more often. Also as I have to say some characters are paying, so I can understand that the development of the game must cost expensive but after paying 15 euros for a game and then have to pay 15 euros more to unlock all the characters c a little abused. (For info currently 8 free characters 6 paid characters). Imagined that the game develops and counts many more characters, you imagined you had to pay 100 euros for all unlocked? Unthinkable. My note is negative because I paid the game thinking I was paying it in full and not half.

It's a good Game, but it's not that easy. There are many Mechanics that you have to learn, but they are usually shown in the Tutorials. Most negative Reviews look like they come from Casuals that Howl when they lose and don't immediately somehow somehow have an op thing or who are just too bad to counter Rannos tongue or Zetter'S Fire. If you are looking for a competetive smash melee similar platform fighter and are ready to practice and learn With this Game Gold is the right place. (The Biggest Difference with smash is that there is no shield, no grab and no ledge. There is Parry instead of shield and walljump on the Edge of the Platform instead of ledge. There is no Substitute for grab.)

Extraordinary smash-like fully turned to the competitive, closer to melee than other Smash Bros (project m apart) because focused on combos, very fast and technical, the same system of air Dodge or almost what makes it more difficult to get out of a combo once in the air (making the concept of towers more explicit), as well as the return of the wavedash. The characters are all very correct although zetterburn and wrastor appear at first glance advantated, and very similar to the Archetypes of Smash Bros (clairen for Marth, wrastor for meta Knight, ranno for Sheik, etc) but with very interesting mechanics and that differ from their model. As the formula wants, a flexible, very dynamic and airy gameplay. Delicious graphics and music. A smash that takes the best of its models.
