Thematic breakdown (I recommend playing the game first before reading)

I see the pokemon world as a coping mechanism by a kid growing up in an isolated town whose reality doesn’t conform to her ideals. After a string of setbacks and misfortunes, she starts surrounding herself with an ever increasing number of imaginary pets and making up adventures to distract herself. Tangentially, the game also touches on the fact that even though the bonds you forge through life have the potential to consume you, it is still better than freezing solid while waiting for a capricious tomorrow.
