Sonic Adventure 2 Battle reviews

Everybody remembers this fondly until they play any other stage than the Sonic and Shadow levels.

For gamers on the GameCube, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was a watershed moment;  Sonic appearing on a Nintendo console, in a new (to Nintendo kids) 3D game.

The music from the game is amazing and iconic.  It perfectly encapsulates the characters themselves and the game universe.

The game contains two campaigns:  a Hero campaign starring Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and an Evil campaign starring Shadow, Dr. Eggman, and Rouge.  Dr. Eggman wants to take over the world, needs the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald to do it, and has an overly complex plan to do so.  All in all, a fun premise.

We also get to meet the ultimate Fan Character OC, Shadow the Hedgehog, the butt of a generation of jokes.

Unfortunately, the game itself is an absolute mess.  The controls are overly touchy, the camera buggy, and the levels in many cases badly designed.  Some of the new ideas, like rail sliding, are interesting but control horribly.  And don't get me started on the unfun and unskippable Knuckles and Rouge levels.

At the end of the day, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle has not aged well.  Even nostalgia can't cover the deficiencies in the game.
