Spaced Out (gamemeisters)

A vicious pirate captain has set up a drug lab in a remote asteroid field on the fringes of the galaxy. Will his villainy go unchecked? Not if detective Rex Spacer has anything to say about that!

Made for the "Game Design and Development" course from Coursera and MSU.

Major modifications:
- 3 levels which grow in complexity, gradually introducing new mechanics and challenges
- alternate win condition: reach the end of the level or kill the boss to reach the next level. Look out for hidden areas and shortcuts!
- a story that links all the levels, including dialogue, scripted events and a simple in-engine cutscene
- 4 types of new power-ups: extra lives, increased attack range, higher speed, and a secret power-up
- pixel art and animations for 3 of the power-ups
- UI panel showing the current number of lives
- 3 new enemy types: bosses with extra health, extra guns, bigger projectiles and a modified appearance
- destructible asteroids with modified appearance

Minor modifications:
- more sounds and music (some borrowed, some modified, some custom-made)
- added text to the "Instructions" menu
- enemy spawners
- trigger zones, invisible walls and other shenanigans to make the narrative work
- visual improvements: changed the color of the particles that spawn after an enemy missile is destroyed so that the player understands they're not dangerous; modified colors for some of the backdrop sprites; created and animated a "finish line" to mark the end of a level; made the chasing enemies a different color for easier differentiation; etc.
- gameplay improvements: shortened player attack range to raise difficulty; if the player dies deep inside a level, a speed power-up appears near the respawn point to help the player reach the place where they died quicker; etc.
