SteamWorld Dig reviews

Well a very good old arcade with simple yet exciting gameplay. Nice graphics, good sound, perferct performance on Nintendo Switch. Will likely play sequel in future.

+ All The challenges to see the End, solvable without practiced Finger Acrobatics (rather casual) + if you need it crisp, go to the last six Archievments + Metroidvania for untrained + Looten and Level Carrot pulls from the first Moment + the Game is just Fun + Ingenious Design, SteamWorld has its own Universe with Recognition Value + price/performance, 9 Hours of Fun-O-Fun for 9 Euros) ° Except in style, the Game doesn't really do anything new. But what it does makes it right ... really good. -Replay Value Through systematic mining of Fields, you get Raw Materials that you sell and then buy better Equipment in the Shop. All the umpteen cash you get up a Level and unlock new/improved equipment. You need that the further (deeper) you progress in the World. To solve the Challenges placed there. A Mix of Boulder Dash and Ori.

SteamWorld Dig is not very varied in itself, one always looks for Gold and new Caves to learn Skills that simplify the Digging, but also eliminate the opponents that appear in the different Worlds. Still, the Game has a great addiction factor, because it doesn't get boring. The opponents are getting Stronger and stronger in the course of the Game and are harder to defeat, e.g. the Turtle or exploding Robot Spiders. I give the Game 7 out of 10 Points. Pro: Beautiful Graphics Different characters in the Game Different Worlds with New Opponents Different Equipment that you can upgrade and must integrate stone Floors, Water and Fire elements that fit well with It. Resreplayable Value Contra: Little variety, basically you do the same No Way to finish the Game when you Die, you can only let yourself revive (Achivement) only one final boss right Short game time

STEAMWORLD DIG combines mining with the traditional Metriodvania gameplay. You play as Rusty a robot who wants to find out more about the mines of his uncle. But the Story is nothing special. This game is a mix of the wonderful webgame MOTHERLOAD and the good old METRIOD. At the beginning you only have a simple pickaxe. You start digging for some worthless minerals and once you have some you go back to the surface to sell those. With the money you earned you can upgrade your pickaxe and buy other helpful upgrades. Eventually you run into a little cave where you can learn new moves to advance further into the mines. Aaaand that's all you do till the end of the game. But it's really fun an addicting(just like MOTHERLOAD). It only takes you 3h to complete the game but this game has an unlimeted replay-value because of the random generation. Everytime you start a new game you have a completely different mine. So it never gets boring. I would recommend this game to everybody who likes Metriodvanias and games that are like MINECRAFT. (Complaints?: I don't have any!)
After loving Dig 2, this game was released on the Switch. When I started I was disappointed at the graphics and it didn't feel as fun. But as I played it and gained power ups I realized I was comparing the fun and speed of the end of Dig 2 with the start of Dig 1. By the end I was having just as much fun. The games are different enough to both be a great experience. Image & Form worked hard to distill the game experience. Their games seem to transcend their genre. If you played Dig 2 first you may be let down by the graphics, music and randomly generate underground. But it's still a compelling experience with many interesting designed elements.

Positive points: The core game play is really fun.

Negative points: Graphics are less clean and sharp than Dig 2. Randomly generated underground is good, but not as unique as Dig 2.
