The Daring Rescue of Pacuvia the Sheep

The Daring Rescue of Pacuvia the Sheep is a short, bizarre, traditional interactive fiction game for C64, Amiga, MS-Dos, Windows and Tandy Model 100. But it's also something more, it's a - drumroll - sentimental research project!

Your character is an operative of a mysterious “Agency”, on a dangerous mission: rescuing the bioengineered sheep called Pacuvia from the clutches of a guy too idiot to understand what he's got. Strapped of all your digital support for security reasons, you'll have to rely on your good ol' analogic equipment to recover Pacuvia. And don't forget she's not necessarily helpless...

The Daring Rescue of Pacuvia the Sheep is a "Sentimental Research Project": what happens when a 46-year-old non-programmer decides to homage the systems he grew up with? Did I manage to code a game from scratch, no editors involved? Did I manage to live up to my 11-years old inner self, who wasn't an enfant prodige and couldn't possibly program anything coherent? Discover that by playing the game... and reading the manual/behind-the-scenes pdf!

This game is powered by XC-Basic (C64), Amos Pro 2.0 (Amiga), QuickBasic 4.5 (Ms-Dos), Microsoft Basic 1.0 (Tandy M100) and QB64 (Windows).

Minimum system requirements

Commodore 64: just the machine and a floppy drive
Tandy Model 100: 32Kb RAM... yeah, I know, the game is HUGE! :-P
Be sure to have a way to transfer the file from a modern PC (a null modem serial cable is the most common solution)
Amiga: 512Kb RAM, Kickstart 1.3 (there's an in-game optional NTSC/PAL screen selection)
MS-Dos: Intel 8088, 512Kb RAM, CGA, 3.5" 720kb floppy drive, Dos 3.2
(286, VGA, Hard Disk and Soundblaster reccommended)
Windows: any contemporary machine capable of displaying 1280x720 resolution in full-screen mode

Can you recognize the machines the game is running on from the screens on the right? ;-) From top to bottom, they are: C64, C64 again, Tandy M100, DOS VGA, Amiga.

L'audace recupero della Pecora Pacuvia è una breve bizzarra avventura testuale, per C64, Amiga, Ms-Dos, Windows e Olivetti M10. Ma è anche qualcosa di più, è - rullo di tamburi - un progetto di ricerca sentimentale!

Il vostro personaggio è un agente segreto, impegnato in una pericolosa missione: salvare la pecora bioingegnerizzata Pacuvia dalle grinfie di un tipo troppo scemo per capire cos'abbia per le mani. Privi di aiuti digitali per ragioni di sicurezza, dovrete fare affidamento su un buon vecchio armamentario analogico per salvare Pacuvia. E non dimenticate che non è esattamente indifesa...

L'audace recupero della Pecora Pacuvia è un "Progetto di Ricerca Sentimentale": cosa succede quando un non-programmatore quaranteseienne decide di rendere omaggio ai sistemi con i quali è cresciuto? Sarò riuscito a programmare un gioco da zero, senza usare editor? Sarò stato all'altezza del mio io undicenne, che non era un enfant prodige e non avrebbe mai creato nulla di lontanamente coerente? Scopritelo giocando... e leggendo il manuale in pdf, col dietro le quinte!
E se siete abbastanza coraggiosi, potreste anche spiare nel mio codice sorgente (resistendo all'istinto di riprogrammare tutto, perché lo rilascio con una Creative Commons License CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
Il gioco è stato programmato con XC-Basic (C64), Amos Pro 2.0 (Amiga), QuickBasic 4.5 (Ms-Dos), Microsoft Basic 1.0 (Olivetti M-10) e QB64 (Windows).

NOTA: Nel pacchetto c'è il gioco anche interamente in italiano, non preoccupatevi! :-)

Requisiti minimi di sistema

Commodore 64: basta la macchina, con un floppy drive
Olivetti M10: 32Kb RAM... sì, lo so, è un gioco ENORME! :-P
Assicuratevi di avere un un cavo seriale null-modem per trasferire il file da un PC moderno
Amiga: 512Kb RAM, Kickstart 1.3 (la versione italiana è solo PAL)
MS-Dos: Intel 8088, 512Kb RAM, CGA, 3.5" 720kb floppy drive, Dos 3.2
(raccomando 286, VGA, Hard Disk e Soundblaster)
Windows: qualsiasi macchina contemporanea in grado di visualizzare la risoluzione 1280x720 a tutto schermo.

Riuscite a riconoscere i sistemi su cui gira il gioco, dagli screenshot qui a destra? ;-) Dall'alto verso il basso, sono C64, ancora C64, Olivetti M10, DOS VGA e Amiga.
