"The Void Bringer (The Backrooms: Level 711)", a fighting & survival horror ZX Spectrum 128k game.

Welcome to The Backrooms, the epic urban legend / creepypasta / liminal space alternate reality. This game is including a non-canon history about the level 711 of The Backrooms (still undocumented in The Backrooms official wiki). Story:

Six beings from different times and dimensions have noclipped into The Backrooms and arrived, due to different circumstances, to the undocumented Level 711. The level is ruled by The Void Bringer, a shapeless being whose only aim is eating the stars of the existing universes. Its valet is a geisha robot named Kira. She is the voice of her master and will "welcome" all the beings that arrive to the level. The travelers will have to work for The Void Bringer and fight each other in order to return to The Frontrooms. Only the final winner will return home, and the rest will be dissected by Kira in her sample tanks.

Controls:

O / joystick left: left.

P / joystick right: right.

Q / joystick up: up.

A / joystick down: down.

SPACE / joystick fire: select / fire / skip starting dialogues in the intro and the interstitial screens.

M: cancel the game and return to the Main Menu.

The Main Menu:

The default control is the keyboard O, P (left-right) and Space to select. If you change the controls of player 1 and play, for instance, with a joystick, when you finish the game and return to the main menu you will be able to use the selected control to use the menu.

Content of the Main Menu:

- First, you can select between a 1 player game (versus the rest of characters controlled by the ZX Spectrum) or a 2 player game (to play with a friend). If you do not select anything the intro will start again after some minutes.

- Then, the player 1 will select which control will use in the game (keyboard, Kempston joystick or Sinclair joystick).

- Finally you can select the character that you want to use in the game. There are six survivors, each one of them with different characteristics. Depending on your choice you will have advantage (or disadvantage) in some of the 5 different challenges that Kira will propose to the fighters.

- Once the player 1 has selected the character for a "player 1 versus all" game, or the player 2 has selected the character for a "player 1 versus player 2" game, the game will start.

The characters:

There are six survivors, but only one of them will finally succeed and will return to The Frontrooms. The rest will perish and be dissected by Kira for fun, so you better do your best for getting out of here!

You will find their names and profiles when you select one at the Main Menu. There you can review how they noclipped to The Backrooms and their Velocity, Size and Damage values. These values are important for your succeed.

-Velocity: from 1(lower) to 3(higher).

- Size: XX(big),SS(small)

- Damage: from 1(lower) to 3(higher).

For instance, when you select a character from the Main Menu, you will see the profile, a picture and something like this under the picture:

This means that the character has Velocity 1 (slow), the Size is big, and the Damage that makes to the other characters is 2. This advantages and disadvantages will make you to think the best way to win each one of the 5 challenges / fights / rounds that you will have to win versus each one of the rest of the characters of you want to return to The Frontrooms.

The Game:

Fight with your selected character versus the rest of the survivors or versus a player 2 selected survivor along 5 rounds or stages of challenges that Kira has devised. Important: the challenges will be shuffled every time a new match happens, so do not expect the same order. As player 1, you will have to fight versus other survivor and try to win the following challenges:

"Doppelgangers": Kira has cloned three survivors that are not currently playing, and now you need to find them in this memory-card game. There are eight cards and you need to select two of them to show them. The characters hidden will be shown and if they are the same one, then you have found the Doppelganger. If the card that you choose has the face of one of the current players, then that card does not have a Doppelganger, so you lose your turn. The player that finds two Doppelgangers out of the existing three will win a point. There are three Doppelganger games, so in order to win this stage you need to win at least two Doppelganger games out of three.

Advantages: there are not special advantages/disadvantages for human players, but the characters controlled by the ZX Spectrum will remember better the cards that have been shown, and will have better luck when selecting the cards according to their Velocity value.

"The Sun Eater": you will have to collect as much suns as possible for The Void Bringer. The player that fills completely the energy bar before the other will win. There are two kind of suns, small and big, and there is a black hole trap that appears from time to time and you need to avoid.

Advantages: if your character' Size is big (XX) will be able to collect both small and big suns. If your character has Velocity 2 or 3 will move faster in the space. If your character's Size is small (SS) you will not be attracted by the black holes, so you do not have to worry about them when they appear.

Disadvantages: if your character's Size is big (XX) then will be attracted to the black holes when they appear, so you will need to keep moving aiming to the opposite side of the black hole for not being swallowed into it. At those moments you cannot move at all, and if you are swallowed then you will lose 1 point of energy from your bar. If your character's Size is small (SS) then you cannot collect the big suns. If your character's Velocity is slow (1) you will move along the space slower than the others.

So, as you can see, it is important to decide a strategy depending on your advantages and disadvantages. Each character requires a different approach. Each game is different.

"The Duel": Kira teleports the players to a hangar divided into two zones. The player 1 is at the left side and the player 2 at the right side. They are wearing hazmat suits and driving an Electrocar. The floor is made of metallic tiles that can be electrified. Your purpose is firing electrified tiles to the opponent in order to remove its energy. You can fire only one electrified tile on a same horizontal position, and there is a limit of tiles than can be fired continuously. Both players start with a full energy bar. The winner is the one that is able to remove all the energy of the opponent.

Advantages: if your character's Velocity is 2 or 3 you will move faster. Each time your opponent touches a tile will lose as many energy points as your character's Damage value (1,2,3) so those character's whose Damage value is 2 or 3 have an advantage in this game.

Disadvantages: ifyour character's Velocity is 1 you will move slower. If your character's Damage is 1 you will need to hit more times your opponent in order to win. Also be aware that, when playing the "player 1 versus all (machine)" game, the characters played by the ZX Spectrum will have different strategies regarding their position at their side of the hangar, so you will have to observe how they move in order to be able to hit them with a electrified tile. Also the electrified tiles that enable those characters controlled by the ZX Spectrum are random and do not depend on the position of the character.

"Energy up": Kira commands you to fill the energy bars to feed the machinery of the Level 711. For that purpose you will have to move a dial (left,right) through some charging chains. If you put the dial in the correct empty place of the chain, you will be able to win 1 point of energy. If you don't put it in the correct place, you will lose 1 point of energy. The winner is the player that completes a full energy bar before the opponent. You can use fire (space) to accelerate the chains, so they will reach you faster, but that is also a risk because you need to measure correctly your movements in order to put the dial in the correct place.

If you learn to use the fire (space) to speed-up the chains you will fill the energy bar before the other player.

Advantages: there are not special advantages/disadvantages for human players, but the characters controlled by the ZX Spectrum will use better the speed-up option depending on the Velocity value of the specific character. So if the character's Velocity is 3, then you will need to press fire to speed-up most of the time if you want to win the match because the character controlled by the ZX Spectrum will use it most of the time.

"The Labyrinth": Kira teleports the players (wearing hazmat suits) to three undocumented parts of the Level 0 of The Backrooms. Your mission is to collect all the food (white points), reveal the complete map of each one of the three labyrinths of rooms, and find the Almond Water (2) and Power-ups (2) available at each labyrinth of rooms. Once everything has been taken you can leave that labyrinth through the opposite door from where you started to scavenge.The winner is the character that has more points when the three labyrinths have been fully finished. Each taken food is +1 point, taking the Almond Water gives you +25 points, taking a Power-up (on of them increases temporarily your velocity, the other teleports back to the beginning of the maze to the other player) gives you +10 points and exiting the labyrinth before your opponent once it is completely revealed and empty of food and items will give you +50 points.

Advantages: if your character's Velocity is 2 or 3 you will walk faster.

Disadvantages: if your character's Velocity is 1 you will notice that you walk slowly.

So the strategy if you are slow is to focus on the items that provide more points. So instead of trying to collect all the food around you, just give priority to finding the Almond Water and Power-ups or exiting the labyrinth before the opponent.

Historia:

Seis seres de diferentes épocas y dimensiones se han desacoplado de la realidad, caído en los Backrooms y llegado, debido a diferentes circunstancias, al desconocido Nivel 711. El nivel es gobernado por Void Bringer, un ser sin forma cuyo único objetivo es devorar las estrellas de los universos existentes. Su asistente es una geisha robot llamada Kira. Ella es la voz de su amo y se encarga de recibir a todos los seres que caen a este nivel. Los viajeros tendrán que trabajar para Void Bringer y luchar entre ellos para poder volver a los Frontrooms (la realidad que conocemos). Sólo el ganador final volverá a casa, y los demás serán diseccionados por Kira y almacenados en sus tanques de muestras.

Controles:

O / joystick izquierda: izquierda.

P / joystick derecha: derecha.

Q / joystick arriba: arriba.

A / joystick abajo: abajo.

SPACE / joystick disparo: seleccionar / disparar / avanzar en las pantallas con diálogos de la introducción y las pantallas intermedias.

M: cancelar el juego y volver al menú principal.

Menú principal:

El control por defecto al cargar el juego es el teclado O, P (izquierda-derecha) y espacio para seleccionar. Básicamente el menú principal funcionará siempre con la última selección de controles del jugador 1. Así que si, por ejemplo, el jugador 1 juega con un joystick, cuando vuelva al menú principal seguirá usando el joystick para controlar el menú.

Contenidos del menú principal:

- Primero, puedes seleccionar entre un juego de 1 jugador (contra el resto de personajes que serán controlados por el ZX Spectrum) o un juego de 2 jugadores (para jugar con un amigo). Si pasado un rato no has seleccionado nada, la introducción del juego volverá a aparecer en pantalla.

- Después, el jugador 1 seleccionará el control que usará en el juego (teclado, Kempston joystick o Sinclair joystick).

- Finalmente puedes elegir el personaje con el que quieres jugar. Hay seis supervivientes, cada uno de ellos con diferentes características. Dependiendo de tu elección tendrás ventajas (or desvantajas) en los 5 retos diferentes que Kira propondrá a los luchadores.

- Una vez el jugador 1 ha seleccionado a su personaje para un juego tipo "jugador 1 contra todos", o el jugador 2 ha selecciondo su personaje para jugar un juego tipo "jugador 1 contra jugador 2", el juego comenzará.

Los personajes:

Hay seis supervivientes, pero sólo uno de ellos ganará finalmente y retornará a los Frontrooms. Los demás morirán diseccionados en manos de Kira sólo por diversión, así que más vale que te pongas las pilas para salir de este infierno.

Encontrarás los nombres de los personajes, junto a su perfil y la historia de cómo llegaron al nivel 711 en el menú principal. Ahí podrás leer cómo acabaron cayendo a los Backrooms y sus parámetros de Velocidad, Tamaño y Daño. Estos valores son claves para tu éxito.

- Velocidad: de 1(baja) a 3(alta).

- Tamaño: XX(grande),SS(pequenyo)

- Daño: de 1(bajo) a 3(alto).

Por ejemplo, cuando seleccionas un personaje del menú principal, verás su perfil, una imagen del personaje y un texto como éste debajo de la imagen:

Esto significa que el personaje tiene Velocidad 1 (es lento), elTamaño es grande, y el Daño que puede infligir a otros personajes es 2. Estas ventajas y desventajas te obligarán a pensar la mejor forma de ganar cada uno de los 5 retos / batallas / niveles que deberás superar contra cada uno de los otros personajes si quieres poder retornar a los Frontrooms (el mundo real).

El juego:

Lucha con el personaje que has seleccionado contra el resto de supervivientes o contra el personaje seleccionado por el jugador 2 a lo largo de 5 batallas o niveles de retos que Kira ha preparado. Importante: los retos / batallas son mezclados en cada partida, asi que nunca jugarás los cinco retos en el mismo orden, siempre cambian. Como jugador 1, tendrás que luchar contra el resto de los supervivientes e intentar ganar los siguientes retos:

"Doppelgangers": Kira ha clonado tres de los supervivientes que no están compitiendo en este momento, y necesitas encontrarlos en este juego de tipo juego de recordar cartas. Hay ocho cartas y debes levantar dos. Si los caracteres que elijas son iguales, entonces has encontrado una pareja de Doppelgangers. Si la carta tiene la cara de los personajes que están actualmente luchando, esas son cartas que no tienen Doppelganger, así que pierdes el turno. El jugador que encuentra dos pares de Doppelgangers de los tres que hay en una partida, gana un punto. Hay tres partidas de Doppelganger, así que para ganar la batalla completa debes ganar al menos dos juegos Doppelganger de los tres que hay.

Ventajas: no hay ventajas/desventajas para jugadores humanos, pero los personajes manejados por el ZX Spectrum recordarán las cartas que ya han sido levantadas, y tendrán más suerte al levantar cartas al azar cuando mayor sea su parametro de Velocidad.

"Cosechadoras": tienes que recolectar tantos soles como te sea posible para Void Bringer. El jugador que complete su barra de energía antes que el otro, gana. Hay dos tipos de soles, grandes y pequeños, y hay una trampa tipo agujero negro que aparecerá de vez en cuando y debes evitar.

Ventajas: si tu personaje tiene un Tamaño grande (XX) sera capaz de recoger tanto los soles grandes como los pequeños. Si tu personaje tiene Velocidad 2 or 3 se moverá más rápido por el espacio. Si el Tamaño de tu personaje es pequeño (SS) no serás atraído por los agujeros negros, así que no tendrás que preocuparte por ellos cuando aparezcan.

Desventajas: si el Tamanyo de tu personaje es grande (XX) entonces serás atraído hacia los agujeros negros cuando aparecen, así que tendrás que moverte en dirección opuesta al agujero negro para no ser atrapado por él. En esos momentos no te puedes mover, ya que estás manteniendo las teclas pulsadas en dirección contraria a la atracción del agujero negro; si finalmente eres tragado por el agujero negro entonces perderás 1 punto de tu barra de energía. Si el Tamaño de tu personaje es pequeño (SS) entonces no podrás recolectar soles grandes. Si la Velocidad de tu personaje es lenta (1) te moverás por el espacio más lento que otros con mayor Velocidad.

Así que, como puedes ver, es importante decidir una estrategia dependiendo de tus ventajas y desventajas. Cada personaje requiere una solución distinta. Cada juego es diferente.

"El duelo": Kira teleporta a los luchadores a un hangar. El jugador 1 está situado a la izquierda y el jugador 2 a la derecha. Visten trajes de contención y conducen un Electrocoche. El suelo esta compuesto de baldosas metálicas que pueden ser electrificadas. Tu objetivo es electrificar mediante tus disparos las baldosas de la zona del oponente para que cuando las rocen pierdan energía. Puedes electrificar sólo una baldosa por fila de baldosas a la vez, y tienes un límite de disparos seguidos. Ambos jugadores comienzan con su barra de energía al completo. El ganador será el que consiga eliminar toda la energía del contrario el primero.

Ventajas: si la Velocidad de tu personaje es 2 o 3 te moverás mas rápido. Cada vez que el jugador contrario toca una de las baldosas electrificadas que has activado, pierde tantos puntos de energía como los puntos de Daño de tu personaje (1,2,3), así que tienen ventaja los personajes cuyo valor de Daño sea 2 o 3.

Desventajas: si la Velocidad de tu personaje es 1 te moverás lento. Si el valor de Daño de tu personaje es 1 tendrás que conseguir más aciertos para poder ganar ya que cuando el contrario roce las baldosas solo perderá un punto cada vez. También es importante que sepas que en la opción de juego "jugador 1 contra todos", los personajes controlados por el ZX Spectrum tendrán diferentes estrategias en cuanto a la posición y los movimientos que hacen en su zona del hangar, así que tendrás que observar como se mueven para poder activar las baldosas correctas y conseguir que las toquen. También ten en cuenta que los personajes controlador por el ZX Spectrum pueden electrificar baldosas que no estén en su fila actual y no dependen de la posición actual del personaje, sino que son activadas en una fila al azar.

"La recarga": Kira te ordena rellenar las barras de energía de la maquinaria del Nivel 711. Con este objetivo deberás mover un dial (izquierda, derecha) a través de unas cadenas de carga. Si consigues ubicar el dial en el único hueco de cada cadena, conseguirás 1 punto de energía. Si no lo consigues y pones el dial en un punto incorrecto de la cadena, perderás un 1 punto de energía. El ganador será el jugador que complete su barra de energía antes que el contrario. Puedes usar el disparo (espacio) para acelerar el paso de las cadenas, de tal forma que te alcanzarán más rápido, pero eso también es un riesgo porque necesitarás calcular correctamente tus movimientos a la izquierda o derecha para poner el dial en su posición correcta.

Si apredes a usar el disparo (espacio) para acelerar las cadenas conseguirás una ventaja suficiente para rellenar tu barra de energía antes que el contrario.

Ventajas: no hay ventajas/desventajas especiales para jugadores humanos, pero los personajes controlados por el ZX Spectrum usarán con mayor habilidad la opción de acelerar dependiendo del valor de su parámetro de Velocidad. Así que si, por ejemplo, la Velocidad del personaje es 3, lo mas seguro es que como jugador 1 tendrás que arriesgar más dejando pulsado siempre que sea posible el espacio, porque el personaje que controla el ZX Spectrum utilizará muy bien la opción de acelerar las cadenas.

"El laberinto": Kira teleporta a los luchadores (que visten trajes de contención) a tres zonas desconocidas del Nivel 0 de los Backrooms. Tu misión es recoger toda la comida (puntos blancos), revelar al completo el mapa de los tres laberintos de habitaciones, y encontrar el agua de almendras (2) y los power-ups (2) disponibles en cada uno de los tres laberintos de habitaciones. Una vez que el laberinto ha sido vaciado al completo de comida y objetos, los luchadores pueden salir por la puerta opuesta a la que entraron (es decir, la del jugador contrario). El ganador será el personaje que acumule más puntos al final de los tres laberintos. Cada comida que se recoge son +1 puntos, encontrar el agua de almendras da como recompensa +25 puntos, los power-ups (uno de ellos aumenta tu velocidad, el otro teleporta al contrario al principio del laberinto haciéndole perder tiempo) dan +10 puntos y salir el primero de un laberinto una vez se ha vaciado y mapeado del todo proporciona una recompensa de +50 puntos.

Ventajas: si la Velocidad de tu personaje es 2 o 3 caminarás mas rápido.

Desventajas: si la Velocidad de tu personaje es 1 observarás que camina lento.

Asi que la estrategia a seguir si tienes un personaje lento es concentrarse en conseguir los elementos que dan más puntos. En vez de intentar recoger todos los puntos de comida alrededor, debes dar prioridad a encontrar el agua de almendras y los power-ups o a salir del laberinto antes que el contrario.

¡Eso es todo! Acabarás diseccionado por Kira en un tanque de muestras o conseguirás volver a los Frontrooms? Te desamos toda la suerte en este viaje a traves de los Backrooms.
