Vejigantes
About
A game in development for Playcrafting NYC through the Graffiti Games 2022 initiative.
Vejigantes originate from Spain’s Festival of Saint James, which celebrated the defeat of the Moors and reclaiming Spain by the Spaniards in the 12th century.
The celebrations were brought to Puerto Rico through colonization but the vejigantes have been reclaimed.
They have now become a central figure in Puerto Rico’s culture, developing into a symbol of cultural identity, resilience, and resistance with a rooted meaning in good vs. evil.
In this game, you play as Yara, who is learning the craft of magical vejigante mask making from your Abuelo (grandfather) in El Campo (the countryside).
Every night, mischievous forest spirits loom around El Campo meaning take things that aren’t theirs.
Craft your mask before sundown and get ready to ward off the spirits around the workshop before they take Abuelo’s things.
