About

From the creator of the Syberia series, experience Benoit Sokal's first adventure game masterpiece.

In 1932, Alexandre Valembois was a young explorer who, with his native friend Antonio Álvarez, wanted to make a name for himself by exploring the mysterious Amerzone region. Befriended by the natives of the region, he witnessed a strange ritual involving a giant egg of the famed white birds. Wanting to prove that the white birds existed, Alexandre betrayed the natives' trust and stole the mysterious egg. Alas, upon his returning to France, nobody believed Alexandre or his journals about the Amerzone.

Sixty years have passed, and the world has changed. World War II has come and gone, the Amerzone remains unexplored and closed off to outsiders by its despotic leader, Antonio Álvarez. Monsieur Alexandre Valembois is an old man at the end of his life, living alone in a lighthouse and wishing to fix his mistake. This is when, a young reporter pays a visit to the old Alexandre Valembois regarding his adventures...

Can you unravel the mystery of the white birds?

Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy reviews and comments

First game of the genius of the brilliant Sokal, we will find in Amerzone the elements that make the charm of his following successes: the strange mechanics and machines, the taste for travel and unexplored lands, the imaginary bestiary, etc. Released in 1999, one cannot deny that the game has a little aged, especially regarding the gameplay. We walk from screen to screen and sometimes risk getting lost in the scenery or digging your head to find out where you are coming from. The puzzles are not too difficult and some levels end up pretty fast. The main plot, introduced very early in the game, does not enrich itself so much during the adventure. The Explorer's diary, one of the first recovered objects, reveals everything you need to know from the beginning of the game! No rebounding or surprises. A fan of syberia, it was the curiosity that pushed me to the Amerzone. I recommend it first of all to the nostalgic Myst-like and to those that Sokal's videogame is dreaming.

Amerzone the Explorer's legacy has pleased me enough despite a small decrease in interest towards the 2/3 of the game. I find that the feeling of adventure/exploration is well rendered and this is for me the main quality of this game. As soon as we take the trouble to make a "pause" from the beginning to read the travel diary and the letter of the Explorer and if we cling well to the story, we will feel invested in this quest that will push us to leave on the traces of the fire Mr. Vahevaria to ACCO breeders his last will. Puzzles are mostly based on objects to find and places to use. The problem is that you can sometimes easily pass by without seeing them. There also seems to be some false puzzles (I was stuck more than an hour at the top of the lighthouse without understanding if I had succeeded with the rudder and if it was used for something). Of course it is a game that has aged quite a lot. I recommend it especially to those who can appreciate the atmosphere. PS: I played offline. Play time about 7h with a little help from the walkthrough

The Amerzone is a game that starts to take from the bottle. And the graphics are proof of that. That said, when I bought this game and I played it again: I was like the day of the release. Certainly this game is stuffed with small defect, which for the most part was invisible when it was released in 1999, but I could not afford to put a negative evaluation. The puzzles are difficult and make the game time considerable. Now everyone can look at the solutions on the Internet but before it was quite complicated for me, and I spent long hours there. but that was all the purpose of this kind of games of course! (who does not remember Myst/riven at the time?) The world and rich and enchanting scenario. You have access to a lot of documentation which, if not indispensable, allows you to immerse yourself in the fantastic world that we are presented. In terms of gameplay, it's classic, of course. with a click on screen screen for advanced. Not innovative in today's time but for the time of very good quality. In purpose Amerzone is a games that I highly recommend. For the old of the day it will make you nostalgic and I think you will spend a good time if you liked it. For the new ones, do not let yourself be put off by the age of the games: you will discover a story that is worth a visit!
