Artificial Defense
About
In a nutshell:"It's a yummy cocktail out of a AC130-Top-Down Shooter, RTS and a bit of Tower Defense. It's surely different, but it works out!"
1 simple task:Defend your Operation System (OS) against intruding creeps.
The execution might be a bit harder, though.Features
Firing off miniguns, launching Hellfire missiles, dropping incinerating Hades-Bombs and colossal asteroids, deploying mighty railgun and acid towers and spawning your own Intrusion Counter Measures (ICMs) to reconquer corrupted databases and firewalls are just some of the actions you can take while fending off the creeps. Earn RAM and upgrade your arsenal and hardware-level. Start as an analog punch-tape system and evolve into a quantum A.I. mainframe.Offense - Orbital ShooterThere are 21 offensive weapons available, reaching from outdated flintlocks, over maverick-missiles to devastating meteors and neutron-bombs. You can switch between three pre-loaded weapon categories and launch the installed weapons every few seconds. Each round you fire costs you RAM and each weapon type has its own unique cooldown so you must choose wisely and adapt quickly to different situations. But beware, aiming requires some skill. Creeps are moving targets and your projectiles need some flight time before impact. You can unlock and install new weapons in the uplab.[/b]Defense - Tower DefenseThere are 21 defense towers available, reaching from pistol-sentry-towers, over incinerating flame-throwers to powerful long-range railgun towers. In addition there are 7 production towers which produce your main resource: RAM (Random Access Memory). Yes, building up a small RAM economy is very important, in order to keep your system routines running. Towers must be deployed by an expensive capsule drop and you have to find the sweet spot between the right amount of resource production towers and the performance of your defense perimeter. You can unlock and install new tower versions in the uplab.Conquer - Real Time StrategySpawn Intrusion Counter Measures (ICMs) in order to conquer corrupted system-structures like databases, honeypots and firewalls. Databases e.g. spawn datablips, which carry valuable data and head for your backup-devices. Every datablip successfully arriving at its destination releases a certain amount of RAM, so you should do your best to protect those important but vulnerable convoys.

Very fun game! The levels are challenging and keep you motivated to proceed. Don’t forget to level up your equipment or you can’t stand a chance. The tutorial is separated into three parts, which are important to learn the game mechanics. Especially the conquer mode is not obvious at first. But if you take a little time to complete these three steps, you are ready for the action packed missions.
The graphics and effects are impressive with very much passion for detail. The same goes for the sound effects and the chiptune soundtrack. Very pleasing to the ear, even after long playing sessions (if you are not inherently averse to the genre).
Very many different controls are supported. A lot of people seem to put confidence in the gamepad or a mix of mouse and keyboard. I’m playing with a multi-touch display on my laptop, which works flawlessly. The buttons are all perfectly sized for touch input.
All in all a very complete and fun game that runs very smoothly, even on an underpowered laptop (Core i3), while keeping a high standard on graphic effects.

First impression:
It's not a big deal on the first look, but if you take into account that this was done by a single guy and take into account that it is a 5$ (maybe a little bit more or less) game, this gets a real insider tip!!
Controls:
There are a lot of things at this game which are "different", so are the controls. E.g.: You do not move the crosshair, but the map laying underneath. (If you want, you can invert this bevaviour though). When I played it the first time I honestly thought "WTF!?", but after some minutes I realized that this kind of input scheme is perfect for this game. Do not give up too early.
Graphics:
Awesome. I don't think that I need to discuss that much. The screenshots are 1:1.
Gameplay:
As I mentioned before: There are a lot of things at this game which are "different" ;-) ... The gameplay is unique and it's really a mixture of a shooter game, tower defense and real time strategy. Mixing up genres normally does not lead to something good, but I think this game is an exception.
Difficulty:
It's again... "different" - this time in terms of very, very hard. But these kind of games are rare these day, so I love it. Yes, you can decrease the difficulty, and honestly I did for some missions.
Buy or not buy?!
If you like strange, different, hard and very smart games: Buy!
If not, you should maybe wait on a sale to give it a try, or stick to your favorite games of course.
Over and Out!
