Blade Quest: Edge of Sorrow
About
In 2010 I was excited to own my first ever smart phone, the Droid Incredible running the Android Froyo update. I immediately set out to make my own turn based JRPG in the spirit of Final Fantasy 6. Three years later our team produced a really exciting demo of the first few hours of the game. At the time there wasn't anything quite like this available on the platform and the game had somewhere in the vicinity of 50 thousand downloads.
Unfortunately, a series of difficulties lead to us ultimately scrapping the project, something I've only somewhat recently made my peace with. At the end of the day it was something that our team can still really be proud of and it stands as just a really wonderful thing.
Keeping up with ever-changing app-store requirements proved a bother over the years and the app was eventually removed by Google. So I'm uploading it here to Itch so that I can leave a final resting place for people to experience the hard work we put in.
This game does work on modern phones! I tested it on a Pixel 4a. There will be a warning that the app is old and doesn't conform to modern permission requirements, but I promise you that the game makes use of no special permissions!
There is one very nasty known-issue which is a potential crash that can happen especially at the very end of the game. This crash happens at the end of battles on the final map so if you're grinding experience for the final boss, save often! Unfortunately I have also had it crash upon defeating the final boss, robbing you of the congratulatory cutscene. I looked into fixing this bug but it seems like it's more trouble than I can really expend to fix. The final cutscene does work so I pray yours doesn't crash!!
If you're interested, I open-sourced the project earlier this year. Take a look at some very old java! https://github.com/p4r4digm/bladequest
