About

Frayed Knights: The Skull of S'makh-Daon is a 3D indie computer RPG for Windows featuring turn-based combat, old-school sensibilities, and a story of high adventure and comedy. Who says RPGs have to be so serious?

In a world of jaded heroes and veteran adventurers, you play a team of misfits: Arianna, a dainty warrior with an attitude problem; Dirk, an adrenaline-junky rogue who doesn’t seem to understand the word ‘subtle;’ Benjamin, a nature-priest and an ill-suited newcomer to the adventuring lifestyle, and Chloe, a ditsy sorceress with a love of cute, fuzzy animals and setting her enemies on fire.

Adventuring is always a dangerous profession, but recently things have gotten bad. Very bad. Teams of expert fortune-hunters are getting "morted," suffering great losses against enemies that are better prepared than ever. In the taverns and Adventurer's Guildhalls, whispered rumors speak of the return of an evil that once all but destroyed civilization. But as many great and famous adventurers fall to this growing threat, perhaps this bunch of losers - called "The Frayed Knights" (but never to their faces) - might just be the heroes the world really needs:

The wrong people at the wrong time.

Features:

  • 30+ hours of gameplay.
  • Challenging, turn-based combat in a game that plays at your pace.
  • A unique "Drama Star" system that rewards the player for playing through tough situations instead of reloading and replaying.
  • A spell named, "Power Word: Defenestrate."
  • Over a hundred base spells, most with several upgraded variants.
  • An innovative trap-disarming / lockpicking system using character skills and items to disable a device one component at a time.
  • Over 80 feats to customize your party as they progress through the game.
  • A detailed, "stats-heavy" rules system... which you are free to ignore if you choose.
  • Nearly 200 different items to be used and abused by your characters.
  • A "Quarterstaff of Nad-Whacking."
  • Sixteen "dungeons" (interior adventuring areas), five outdoor areas, one village, an alternate dimension, and some green dude's one-room hovel.
  • A THICK (virtually) 69-page PDF manual. For those who want more than just the tutorials...

Frayed Knights: The Skull of S'makh-Daon reviews and comments

Only For CRPG (classic Role Play Game) Lovers suitable indie work. This game, created By only one Developer, in the Tradition of old CRPG, such as Might & Magic or Wizardry, scores in some Places, but also has its Difficulties, which make it very bulky for Beginners or not "Initiates" of the Genre. On the one hand, there is only one Degree of Difficulty, which is probably too violent for Beginners. Professionals tend to have fewer Problems here. You have to note that there is little Tactics in the Fights and that they usually run according to the same once found scheme ... The next Minus point, which again won't stop the Pros from Playing, is a really outdated graphic. That's always not very important to me either, but the Game looks like the Mid-Nineties. Some indie games have shown that this is going better, too. Next disturbing Point are far too little Equipment (e.g. only 2 Rings and 2 Pairs of Shoes found throughout the Game). Furthermore, it was annoying for me personally that I took everything with me in the Game and still did not reach the maximum level. Not nice for me, for others perhaps less of a Problem: The Game is not available in German, but only in English. I regret the fact that much of his great Advantage, namely his Humour, has eluded me. A Localization would be nice but nice-unfortunately no German patch is available ... The Humour just described is sometimes great. It hilariously scrutinizes the Genre and its Maroons through the Party. One Example here would be the Discussion upon Entering a Dungeon, why the Torches are still burning in these tunnels, which have been abandoned for Ages. Then there is again funny Dialogue. :-D The Quests are also sometimes very funny. So the initial rat Quest, which is obligatory in Role-playing games, is a little different than usual ... There are also a few Special Features that are not found in other Games: If you Play longer without loading, you collect so-called "drama points," which can be issued for strong Actions at any time. When Loading a game Stand, however, they are completely lost. This is how It is intended to prevent the Storage and Loading of Places in the Game ... The second Peculiarity is the Perseverance that is the Resource for Actions of the Characters. Short-term loss can be quickly refreshed, but the maximum Limiting loss of Endurance can only be replenished due to Sleep and very few other Things. This is to plan the Household of your Powers in the Game. On a positive Note, a longer Manual than .pdf and a Strategy Guide. You can't blame the Developer for not putting Love into his Project ... Even a decent Game time and no Bugs I have lost are noticeable. However, the Replay Value is low, because you only have a predetermined Party, which you can skillfully skilfully. Verdict: Only for genre lovers suitable Indie work, where an ugly Graphics, but also a lot of Humor is delivered.
