Hades reviews

Concise Review:

Satisfying, clever, engaging, addicting and very very fun. The combat feels tight, responsive and dynamic. The progression is very well done. The number of different builds is incredible. I loved experimenting with different strategies. The story, voice acting and writing is surprising well done. The longevity was amazing. Fucking great game.

Final Score: A-

Journal Style Review:

First impressions. The art style looks nice enough. The gameplay feels tight. We will see if the game does a good job at bringing me back.

I can tell what people are talking about after my first night of playing. It’s really good. It’s addictive. I’m really enjoying figuring out what all the different symbols mean and how to spend the various points. The combat is fast and feels great. It’s hard to describe why it feels good but it does.

I’m loving coming up with new builds that mesh well together. I feel smart finding synergies and there is a lot to experiment with. Also the writing is funny and the voice actors are really good. Talking to the characters has been entertaining rather than a chore.

I don’t think I’m as good as I should be. But I’m also using a different weapon every game. Which I’m enjoying but I know I’d be able to progress further if I used my most successful weapons consistently. I change it up every time to get the bonus purple gems and to keep it fresh.

I’ve made it to hades twice now. Havnt won yet. Once with a bow doom build that was insane and once with the gun with chill. Range weapons are the best I think. They have some interesting builds and the distance makes it easier to stay high on health.

I’ve fought hades three times now. I was super close this last time. I had the rail gun with Zeus and Poseidon mainly. There was some good synergy. I beat hades once but then on the second health bar I was like a 6th of a bar left. Very close. I blew it too. I had such a good build and I started with 4 revives and full health. I was set. A lot of fun though. This game is great. I can’t wait to try again. At this point I feel like I want to escape with every weapon at least once. It’s hard to tell how long I will enjoy this game but I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon as of now.

Got my first escape. Used the bow and Zeus as a primary. It was great. I’m still motivated to keep playing. I’m going to try to escape with every weapon. I might do some bounties as well when I want to use my favourite weapons again.

After beating hades for the first time I won the next 4 in a row. Shield, rail, spear and bow with heat. I’m still loving this game.

Bow is my best weapon, I have 3 clears with the bow. Rail gun is second best. I just had my best escape yet for most health remaining. It was a fast attack speed doom build and it was insane. Still loving the game. Still staying up late playing just one more run. This game is climbing the ranks. High A-.

Just beat the mains story and got the credits. I actually liked it. It’s a clever ending. And I still want to keep playing. I followed it up with my best bow build yet on heat 3. It was a breeze. My build was unreal.

15 escapes and I’m still enjoying the game. I still find reasons to keep playing. It still feels like there are new builds to make and new weapons upgrades to try out.

24 escapes. I’m slowing down now which makes sense but wow I’m surprised how long I’ve wanted to play this game. I don’t think im fully done yet either. But I am starting to feel like I’ve run out of new unique builds.

I’m putting it down for now but I can see myself returning for more runs in the future every so often. Loved this game.

Picked it up again after a short break. 50 clears now. A short break made the builds feel fresh again. I don’t know when but I’m confident I’m going to come back again.

I’ve now played over 100 runs. I feel similarly towards hades as I did towards Warzone back in 2019/2020. I just keep returning. I will have a couple other games on the go but I still would rather do another run Hades. This is the highest compliment I can give. Fantastic game. I fucking love it.

Slept on this game for ages but the other day I finally bit the bullet.

Yeah I see why this game is so popular. I spent a good portion of my time at work today wishing I was at home playing Hades.

Okay let's start with the negatives.

I so far don't have any.

Now into the good stuff.

I like me some good voice acting and this game has it.

I like good art style and level design and this game has it.

I love love love a good OST and this game HAS IT.

I love fluid and intuitive combat systems and this game HAS IT.

I love the feeling of falling in love with a game and this game HAS IT.

I love a good perk system and this game has it.

I love that even though you start from square one after every death it NEVER feels like bullshit or feels repetitive in any way, more so of a "Yeah, I got it this time."

I love that after progressing through what seems like at the time to be "A bullshit bossfight" I went "Hey, if I tried this .." and shredded said bullshit boss fight.

This game is good. If you're an idiot like me and sleeping on this game, stop, wake up; you aren't Green Day. This is a game worth every penny.

Hades is one of the most flawless video games/pieces of art I have ever experienced.

The gameplay loop is incredibly satisfying, the many linking systems increase the longevity from 7 hours to 70 hours and more

The music is tremendous, the art style and visual are gorgeous. The story, characters, voice acting and dialogue had me completely hooked.

Do yourself a favour and buy this game, you probably already have it though

I gave it a try. I hate repetition but there have been a few rougelites that I have enjoyed. This is not one of them. Most of the game is well made but the repetition is ridiculous. After the first couple of runs I was already bored with the first level. The poorly named "god mode" is the only reason I stuck it out. I can't bring myself to play anymore after a single completion.

Date Completed: 2021-03-09
Playtime: 9h
Enjoyment: 5/10
Recommendation: If you like rougelites you'll like it.
Best game you can play handheld on switch

Hades is an incredibly addicting rogue like dungeon crawler, that deftly balances infinite death with story and character growth.  It’s fast paced and challenging, while still giving you what you need in terms of story and upgrades to keep you motivated to keeping going (and dying.)

It’s almost a bit like Civilization, where you will be playing late into the night, trying to shut it off while constantly saying to yourself it’s only one more turn.

With incredibly tight mechanics and addicting gameplay loop, Hades is the ultimate rogue-like. The variances in weapons, plus insanely strong character builds, all randomized by upgrades, create a game that is so satisfying to play. The art direction, music, and voice acting all contribute to elevate this indie game to the big leagues.

I've reached the credits and dumped more than three dozen hours into this game, so I'm considering it completed. I know there's an epilogue that I'll get to sooner rather than later, but I do want to move onto other games to some degree.

A lot has been said about this game and it's all been said before. The reactiveness of the characters is mind-blowing, the story is more a story than a narrative but fits not only the style of game but the medium of video games perfectly. It avoids the common roguelike problem where you just kinda... stop when you're done with the game by giving you specific gameplay goals and narrative justifications to continue. Tons of hashtag #content but, rather than just filling up time, they all have little sidestories and lore attached that you can actually view without reading a wiki like in Pyre and Transistor - two of the biggest failings of those games IMO.

Really this feels like the culmination of everything Supergiant has done so far, to the point where each previous game was like a "test" of how to put this all together. The ensemble cast and character portraits of Pyre, the reactive story of Pyre, the weapons and combat or Bastion, the music stems changing on the fly like Transistor, the style of lore and setting of Transistor - yeah it's not the same setting but it does the same thing where it's a unique spin of a common setting. It even continues the themes that I think Supergiant has been so good at tackling so far - using the video game medium to tell stories of cycles of pain. Zagreus is just as stubborn and withdrawn as Hades and it affects both of them. The gods constantly stab each other in the back and then pretend everything is ok at the drop of a hat, Hades and Persephone included even though they pretend to be above it. You actually get more out of the narrative from replaying it, since continued replays reinforce the narrative theme in interesting ways.

The only thing that doesn't excite me too much is the soundtrack. It's solid, but Bastion and Transistor are some of my favorites ever, even if I wasn't as keen on Transistor's gameplay as Bastion or Hades. This just kind of ends at "solid." Even the use of changing around stems on the fly was much more impressive in Transistor, both thematically and technically speaking.
