Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order reviews

This is a very good game, and one of the best Star Wars games. The narrative pacing, sound design, and character interactions/dialog coalesce to make it instantly recognizable as authentically Star Wars. It is far from perfect however. Many of the components which surround the core experience feel hastily implemented. The map is needlessly confusing, the sliding sequences are frustrating, and some of the characters introduced later in the game are very shallow and uninteresting. More often than not, however, the core experience is so well done that these complaints are diminished.

This game compares well to the first Uncharted game. As such, I'm hoping the success of this game affords Respawn the time to make the next entry in the series truly great.
In summary Jedi Fallen Order is fantastic. The gameplay is satisfying, the sound design is great, the graphics are aesthetically pleasing and the story is awsome. There a few negatives but they are pretty relevant within this amazing game.

The gameplay, in sumary is extremely satisfying. There are a few issues where it is buggy, resulting in falling through the map occasionally and frame rates droppping when the game renders but these are minor issues overall and can be easily overlooked especially when the game recieves its patch. It is significantly more difficult than most other star wars titles. That can mainly be put down to the combat system and is definitely not a problem. This game is not a hack and slash like the compared Force Unleashed series. The combat system is designed around patience and counter attacks, not being aggressive and reckless which I believe reflects the story in itself as the main character Cal constantly questions the consequences of his decisions in the story. The game rewards you for taking your time and thinking your way around problems, especially when exploring as you can quickly acquire higher force and health quantities if you look around planets properly. Although this is not necessary to beat the game it makes it a lot easier to complete with the upgrades recieved from exploring. You collect powers as you progress through the story and re-build Cal's connection to the force which then allows you to further explore planets you have previously visited which adds to the replayability. It is extremely replayable as you want to go back to the planets you visited to collect everything from the lightsaber customization to the ponchos and ship customization. The customization system isn't the best but it offers a great deal of options, I don't have a problem with not being able to make your own character because this game primarily tells Cal's story, a REAL story with REAL people. That is what I really want to emphasise with this review.

The story moves at a brisk yet REAL pace, everything that happens does so in a realistic time frame. What I mean to say is that most star wars content we recieve including force wielders never tells a human and satisfying story, this game changes that massively. The story feels human, all characters feel real and each of them have their scars and traumas but continue on with their journies anyway. Even the main companion BD-1 feels like he is real, all of these characters have flaws, they all have something they need to face; they all do so in this story and it results in a powerful and REAL story. The ending is satisfying and completely makes sense for these characters and their arc's. This is a very real star wars story and I think has shone light on what stories star wars is capable of. You don't see a Jedi slash his way through everything, you see a frightened and traumatised man face his fears to become something great and constantly question if what he is doing is right. This isn't just a story about a Jedi and his crew, this is a story about a man becoming a Jedi, earning that title, seeing the mental barriers along the way and learning to cope with his problems to do everything that he does in the story. This is a redmeption and development story, I love every character involved in this story. You see optimism, corruption and genuine emotional complexity in all characters which is furthered by the great voice acting and lip syncing. Overall I think that this game is incredible and is necessary to play at least once, to watch the legacy of a hero develop.

Update: Game finished. Performs like shit on a base PS4 but the story is so good and the ending is imo, very satisfying. I can't wait to see the next one.

The game still performs like crap on a base PS4 but once you get used to its traversal mechanics pretty well, this game is just plain good. I'll admit, I really wasn't expecting this game to be even close to as good as it is. The story is so much better than I expected and you're always (At least I was) guessing what's going to happen next. Skills are dope and once you reach a certain point that I won't spoil, finally ecstasy.

Okay so, this is a game of high highs and very low lows.

The combat is FUN, I mean, I'm only like 5 hours in and I already have a dual bladed light saber? YES PLEASE THANK YOU.

The characters seem pretty likable and dope so far.

Music is Star Wars'y and I dig it.

I dig the worlds so far

Now on to the negatives.

Holy shit this runs badly on a base PS4.
Cutscenes are a total mess, causing lag and even completely stopping the game for them to load. (This led to one event in particular bugging out and ruining the moment.)]

Back tracking is a goddamn disaster and needs to be revamped.

The "Souls like" bonfire BS sucks as does the incredibly low stim count at start considering they don't heal for shit.

Overall, I like this game enough to give it a pass but it's bogged down by some humongous issues that keep it from being a great game.

I'm not done yet, but can already tell this is going to be one of my all-time favorites. It's a unique blend of souls-like melee combat, metroidvania exploration, and Star Wars. It's so awesome to get to play as a jedi. And especially since it's not one we know like Luke or Anakin. This is a new character that we can make our own. At the same time there is a compelling narrative going on here. The characters are interesting and have backstories that I actually want to learn more about. There is so much to do and discover and kill, and tons of different planets to do it on. There are so many interesting puzzles and things to collect and explore. This is honestly the perfect type of game for me. I'm going to collect every last little thing and scan every piece of trash on the ground and open every chest and get every achievement. Though ins some really dumb decision there is no achievement for completing the game on the hardest difficulty, so I've given up on that after playing if for quite awhile. It' much more fun now.

+ Strong characters and settings

- Liberally copies but never surpasses inspirations
- Terrible reward structure for exploration
- Most of story is just McGuffin chase
- Glitchy and lack of polish
GOTY 2019
+ Amazing fight system

+ Great voice acting
- The camera can get clunky in tight spaces
Best Star wars game I've played

This is a solid 7/10. It has its issues, but in the end, you're going to love it. But let's start with the bad stuff.

9/10, 80% ratings? People say this could be Game of the Year. I have a (bad) feeling that people say this only because this is the best Star Wars game in years. Compared to everything previous this is an awesome game - compared to other productions in the past year, this is more like a 6/10. Maybe 6,5/10 (fix some bugs, textures and I've give it 7/10). You know this feeling, when you've spend last couple of years getting kicked in the back, and you feel relieved when finally something nice happens to you, even if it's a very small thing, and you feel extremely happy? I guess this is the reason for higher scores by the reviewers and players.

This game is not meant for casual players - even the "story mode" difficulty will cause you a lot of trouble. Like when you play games to deal with your anxiety, this game will induce your anxiety. Like when a lot of games give you puzzle to solve and you feel the rush of dopamine after you solve them, in this game you're simply glad the puzzle is over.

There are outdated mechanics. Seriously, a health bar in 2019? It's fine, I get it, but it's not something for casual players who want to enjoy the story. And checkpoints... In most modern games, you know you can safely leave the game (intentionally, or when the power goes off) and your progress will be saved. Not this game - Fallen Order uses checkpoints, that you need to manually interact with. I didn't know that - so the next day I had to replay nearly an hour of the same stuff. And there were cutscenes within this hour - cutscenes that cannot be skipped.

Speaking of the same stuff - once you're done with one planet, you travel to the next, and then the game tells you need to go back to the first one. There, you fight with all... the... same... enemies... in... the... same... places, in... the... same... numbers. Oh, and no fast travel - you have to walk all the way back.

Console version has issues, like textures loading very slowly, or not loading at all. Graphically this is a game from 2010. The way the wookies look? Oh my...

The game is nice. There's awesome music! It looks nice (just not 2019 nice), and there's some nice humor, lightsaber combat is awesome, and it's one of the best Star Wars games of the XXI century, Respawn did a really, really great job! After you get used to outdated mechanics it's pretty fun to play. But not GOTY, nor 9/10 - it's the best SW game of the decade, sure, just not the best game of the year compared to other modern productions.

And it's difficult. Don't fall into the "story mode" difficulty setting trap - it's still difficult, mainly because the mechanics and control's react time is far from perfect. If you're a person who gets angry when you pay a lot of money for a game and it only makes you feel like crap, Fallen Order is not for you. If a game you bought makes you wanna sell it after a couple of hours of playing, the game is not for you. Fallen Order is a game for a bunch of hardcore players and hardcore players only.

Keep that in mind before you buy it.

Now, the good stuff, which basically makes you forgive everything I mentioned earlier - this is the best SW game in the last 10 years. Despite technical problems and the overall feeling of "could use one more year in development", this is a greatadventure that is enjoyable to play and once you get to the very end and final boss, you're going to enjoy it very much. It's a great Star Wars adventure that will make you think "it's too short" and "when can I pre-order the sequel". The final sequence is a masterpiece with the characters, visuals, gameplay and music.

So in the end, while this isn't a game of the year, isn't very easy, and is troubled by technical and story issues, Respawn did a hell of a job.
