Kung Funky
About
Kung Funky is a game inspired by Irem arcade classic Kung-Fu Master/Spartan X. I was mildly obsessed with this arcade when I was young, but I was terrible at it! I don't think I ever made it to the second floor.
That's why I decided to recreate it closer to what my experience of the game was: not moving from the center of the screen, and just be rushed by enemies dancing to Masato Ishizaki's tune.
Kung Funky therefore ended up becoming a mash-up of Kung-Fu Master and a rhythm game à la Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero. The original Kung-Fu Master was inspired by what turned out to be Bruce Lee's final movie "The Game of Death", so in its honor I drew my main character as a pixelated version of Lee in the movie, with his signature yellow jumpsuit and Onitsuka Tiger sneakers. For the background I mixed some elements from Kung-Fu Master with some from the film.
Kung Funky was made in a week (OK, it ended up being more like 10 days) during a Week Sauce game jam.
