MEND (Oculus Launch Pad Demo)
About
This is the gameplay demo for MEND that I submitted to Meta for their Oculus Launch Pad 2019 program. I worked my ass off to deliver this demo, and I wanted to finally release it into the wild.
Demo Features:
- Cross-reality, co-op gameplay between two local players (Oculus PC HMDs only)
- Independent, simultaneous audio output to two separate audio drivers
- Some sweet tunes
- Some cool art
Demo Credits:
Note: These credits are strictly for this demo. I’ve listed each developer in the order they joined the team, as well as their individual contributions.
- Justin Palmer: Game Design, XR and Unity Engineering, 3D Art (Fox Sister: modeling, texturing, rigging, implementation; Owl Sister: modeling, texturing, rigging, implementation), SFX Implementation (FMOD), Q.A. (Oculus VRCs), Project Documentation (budgeting, pitch, GDD, Jira) and Management
- Jonathan Marlin: Music Composition
- Jonathan Schrack: Shader Programming (dynamic platforms), FMOD Engineering (simultaneous, dual driver output of separate audio streams)

- Kathryn Hicks: 2D/3D Art (Owl Sister: Hand Model, Texturing; Various UI elements: Controls diagram, Timer UI)
Important:
This demo is over two years old, and therefore unsupported and provided as is. It will not be updated, bugs will not be fixed, new features will not be added, and more demo content will not be built. The target platform is strictly OCULUS PC VR. This demo will not run as a stand-alone app on Quest. It will not run on SteamVR. Use a Rift or Oculus Link.
This is the same build that I submitted to Meta at the conclusion of my Launch Pad program in January 2020. I put this demo together over the course of three months, all while working a full-time, corporate IT job (i.e., 40+ hours per week). I later won a scholarship from Meta in May 2020 for my work on this demo.
Concerning the gameplay timer:
There were a limited number of judges with a limited amount of time to play through each submitted demo from Launch Pad. I don't remember how many projects were submitted at the end, but there were about 100 developers in my cohort. The judges put a strict 5-minute limit on gameplay evaluations, and I added the timer to make their lives a little bit easier. No, it can't be disabled. No, I won't make a new build without the timer.
