OVERWHELM is an action horror-world platformer where enemies power-up and you don’t.
  • Horror-world Exploration: Explore the oppressive caverns of the hive, guided only by a sparse map. Enemies can appear from anywhere at any time.

  • Bosses Give Enemies Power-Ups: As you defeat each of the five unique bosses, their abilities get distributed to the enemies of the world with escalating difficulty.

  • Tactile, Tense Combat: Combat is crunchy and fast. One hit and you die. Three deaths and the run is over. Defeat bosses in different orders to optimize your playthrough.

  • Intense Soundtrack & Soundscape: The sparse but powerful soundscape keeps you focused and scared. The soundtrack provides occasional ominous synths to compliment intense boss fights and big moments.

OVERWHELM reviews and comments

With Overwhelm You get a Retrogame that is very reminiscent of the old Metroid Games. Your Reflexes are in demand here, and every Little Thing can doom you. With only 3 Lives you have to play through the small-looking game, which is extremely difficult (Good that the Developers had a Heart and installed an Easymode, but which also has its Pitfalls). The Control is classic via WASD and Jumping over Space (Twice Space = Double Jump). The Goal runs over the Cursor and The Shooting or Melee with the Left or Right Maustast. The Game is suitable for in between and should be played by People with strong Nerves. Otherwise Have fun in this Retroalpine Dream. Respect from me who managed this with the 3 Lives!

In OVERWHELM, you control an isolated soldier who was sent to remove a hive of monsters. You are armed with only a firearm with a limited amount of ammunition and a melee attack that propels you a short distance. The melee attack also acts as a double jump, allowing you to get an extra height to cross the layout of the Metroidvania type hive. However, unlike Metroidvania, these actions are the only things you do in the game; your character has no bonuses to find when you explore the hive, but there are some for the hive inhabitants. For Yes, they evolve! When you kill a boss, monsters will change shape. The game is to feel overwhelmed. From Visual design to audio to gameplay, every part of the game is designed so that the challenge you are presented to you becomes overwhelming. And yet, it does so in a way that is neither frustrating nor unjust, while not eliminating the challenge and weakening the horror of the game. OVERWHELM manages to find a good balance in which, when you play, things seem difficult and oppressive, as if you were in the midst of a sci-fi horror film that makes me think of alien. Visual effects, the sound of heart beat, lack of ammunition. I really like all the Super raw visuals but with a solid color palette and a beautiful animation. It's really a good retro realization and it's also a very solid platform. If you find the game too difficult in the options it is possible to have assistance with aiming, unlimited lives or ammo. The little game is akin to a rogue like, because every death teaches us something and makes us want to redo some. Either because you know how to do better, or you want to try to run it better next time. So you never feel like a game that tries to shoot you down, but rather a game that builds you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVpiJ-IEczA OVERWHELM has something interesting under his hood with his system of enemy evolution, but he does not overlook his time when it comes to offering a rewarding game and a fun challenge. -------------------------------------------My steam curator profile, Subscribe to support my work:)-------------------------------------------find me on twitch.
