Rett Syndrome is a neurological disorder that is caused by random mutations in a gene called MECP2. Diagnosed almost exclusively in girls symptoms typically appear in toddlerhood. Many children with Rett are unable to speak, walk or use their hands. Breathing problems, feeding tubes, seizures, anxiety, gastrointestinal and orthopedic issues are common. The Syndrome is not hereditary and can happen in any family (1 out of 10,000 female births) and over 350,000 girls and women, throughout the world have Rett Syndrome. Despite the difficulties they face, girls with Rett syndrome make eye contact, full of joy of life, and fondly nicknamed “Silent Angels”.
