About

Spirit of the North is a single-player 3rd-person adventure game inspired by the breathtaking and mysterious landscapes of Iceland. The story takes root from various pieces of Nordic folklore. The game is unique in that it purposefully has no dialog or narrative. Players must breathe in their surroundings to solve various puzzles and speculate the meaning of a lost ancient civilization. Play as an ordinary red fox who’s story becomes entwined with the guardian of the Northern Lights, a female spirit fox. As you journey over the mountains and under red-stained skies, you’ll discover more about your companion and land left in ruin.

Spirit of the North reviews and comments

I really wanted to love this game as we really don't have enough games where you play as animals. However, this game is just another example of an indie game with a lot of heart being ruined due to poor controls and mechanics. The biggest issue I had was how poor the saving and checkpoint was. You will hit certain markers for a checkpoint and a chapter start but every time I would come back to the game I would be replaying the last 15 mins of gameplay, even when I just started a new chapter. This makes it very frustrating to play this game in multiple sittings. The other issue is how poor the controls are. What's really at fault here is the environmental reaction with the character. There is so much rebound when performing jumps and the platforming required that it makes for a very rough time. On top of this the platforming just isn't good. Another issue is there is pretty much no direction given aside from the wisp sometimes helping guide you. There are times when it is very straight forward and other times like the second to last level is a fucking maze. The entire penultimate chapter doesn't even need to exist. It is extremely tedious and annoying because it is huge and there is only vague direction give by the statues. By the end of the game I was just ready to be done and it sucks because if it wasn't for the tedium and poor mechanics, it's a decent game at heart.
