About

The Howler is an indie puzzle platformer game developed by Antanas Marcelionis.

Plot

The plot of the game is based on the Lithuanian novel Hour of the Wolf. It is set in an alternate version of the 20th century Lithuania. The Alliance of Free Cities was created by the Rothschilds. Alchemists perform their research, and inventors fly their steampunk airships, mechanics create robotics. The story follows a former United States Marine Antanas Sidabras, who lives in the Free City Of Vilnius and investigates a murder. A major conspiracy comes up during his investigation.

Gameplay

Antanas Marcelionis was the illustrator of Hour of the Wolf. The game inherits the same steampunk-induced visual style. The objective of the game is to fly your air balloon over multiple obstacles that will destroy it upon making contact. There are two ways of blowing the balloon. The players are able to either use their left mouse button to inflate the balloon or yell into the microphone if they have one (this is the default control scheme in the game).

The players can also control the wind flow with the arrow keys. The game's world is highly interactive, so it is possible to get more speed and elevation using chimneys and steam pipes. The game heavily relies on physics and wind simulation, as the players have to avoid sharp obstacles, mines, and all other sorts of hazards.

The Howler reviews and comments

How to rate a Game like this? Beautifully drawn Backgrounds, but playfully extremely flat, with a Penchant for Masochism. After I died six times in the same Place, I had no Desire. You need a lot of Patience for this Game Mechanics, which consists only of being pushed to the left or right in the right flow of Wind, you should only land somewhere or pick up Or deliver parcels and you are not allowed to toast anywhere. You need a lot of Patience until you get to the Point where you realize that it's not worth the Entertainment value and that after a certain Time you get the Collectible cards (the only Reason to buy this Game for under 20 Ct.). Ne, I can't rate this Game in a positive way. A classic mobile game where you don't have to offer much, as all the "mobile phone gamers" have nothing to do with good Games. And the artistic Rest of the Game belongs as a Drawing Hung on the Wall. P.S. I haven't tested the Controls by noise microphone, but I can't imagine it Adds value when I'm sitting screaming in front of my PC. I already cursed enough when I died all the time.

The Game is good. The Game Idea is probably almost as old as that of the Computer Games themselves. Control an Object, balloon, from A to B, where the Possibilities to actively determine The Direction are limited. In this Game you can only drive the (hot air) Balloon up (by turning on the Burner), everything else happens through other Influences such as Gravity and Wind Direction. The Latter varies depending on the altitude Of The Flight. To make it a little harder, there are pointed Corners and flying Bombs that don't do the Balloon any good. And yet it's Fun (me, anyway). If the Balloon still ends up where it should go, or have I given too much or too little Gas, can I still correct or do I have to watch helplessly the crashing Balloon? But the Game is really short. Even if you sometimes need multiple Attempts, you'll take little more than two Hours to have the Game played, including a small Bonus level that has a different Aircraft at your Disposal. Given the good Price, especially in the Sale, this would be OK. I would just like a par Level more steering the Balloon through the City. The Graphics of the Game are idiosyncratic and coherent, matching the Story in which the 15 + 1 Levels are packed, about a steampunk Vilnius of the early 20th Century (So roughly). The Balloon controls itself very well, The Balloon can apparently also be controlled by Language (Noise?) (I have not tried), which could probably become extremely funny especially in the Group. Pro & Contra: + Simple but Entertaining Game principle + Good Graphics and Vibe o Too short rating: 08/10 An entertaining Remake of a classic Game principle.
