The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reviews

The first 10 hours were some of the most magical moments in my time with gaming.

This was the first game I played for the Switch - and one of my favorite Zelda games. More open world than any previous Zelda game. My one complaint were the shrines...I feel like quantity overtook quality here, and I would have preferred less, more in-depth and differentiated temples. All in all though, great game, cool that you could (if you were good enough) literally start and complete the game immediately if you so choose.
The Legend of Zelda seems to do well no matter what medium it's a part of. Whether it be the jump from 2D to 3D, realistic to toon, jumping into motion controls, and finally into the open world genre. The magic with Breath of the Wild's open world comes with the seemingly endless opportunity. When first gazing off into the distance, I was shocked to see that I could go to and climb anything I saw. Breath of the Wild always had me grinning ear to ear because of its genius physics and fully-realized world. The only gripe that I could even hurl its way is that I didn't particularly love the music; especially in contrast to the rest of the games.
Breath of the Wild is the definitive game you can truly get lost in. The world is beautifully crafted to fit the setting of a technologically advanced society that was devastated a century ago trying to rebuild. Every person you see has something to say and something to reveal about how they are dealing with the events that nearly destroyed the world. The story is simple on the surface being about a chosen hero who is tasked with finishing his mission and finally defeating the evil that has plagued the world for a century. The deeper story comes when you begin to explore and find out there is so much more to the story than just a simple premise. The war that took place had a lasting effect on everyone, including the 4 heroes who each played their own role in the war and aftermath while having unique motives and personality. Exploring seems virtually endless just due to how much there seems to be.
The story would be able to stand on its own against many other games, but it also manages to place the story with amazing gameplay. The gameplay reflects the setting, free. One of the things that blew my mind is how many solutions every problem has in the game. Anything is a weapon and every weapon will be used eventually when fighting enemies. The combat still has me looking up videos on how to kill a small camp with twenty weapon switches and ten bombs.
I know this game will not be for everyone, but I do highly recommend to give it a try especially if its your first Zelda title.

Breath of the Wild seems to be a standard of excellence for so many things: game design, open world progression, style, challenge, even down to things like collectibles and boxart. Breath of the Wild seems to flow in a natural storyline and progression no matter which way you go, and it'll be different every time. The style and graphics of the game make the most of an underpowered system, and no matter where you go, you'll find a surprising (and gorgeous) amount of detail. My only problem was with the presentation of the story: getting a few cutscenes here and there that show a bit of the characters walking around did nothing for putting together what happened 100 years ago.

It's probably best Zelda I've played (and I've played almost all of them) but a few things keep it from the ridiculously high scores that the love sick reviewers have given it.
1) Basic melee combat. Sure you can do some interesting things if you go out of your way but the central melee combat is plain and rather boring.
2) Straight-forward story. No twists, turns, or hooks.
3) Silent protagonist. It only serves to weaken a story and this story is already pretty weak.

Date Completed: 2020-03-12
Playtime: ~ 50h
Enjoyment: 8/10
Recommendation: Yes, it's a solid game. Wish the story was more engaging though.
This is my 2nd favorite game all time and it’s there for a reason
