Underground: SafeHouse

Experience a first-hand what it is like to escape to a safe house in New York City during the abolitionist movement in the 19th century. 

Using augmented reality this experience seeks to inspire and delight the user with a virtual replica of a troubled moment in New YorkCity's history that is weaved into the historical arch of America's abolition movement.  The user uses a smartphone to access the virtual replica world of escaping to the Hopper Gibbons Safe House.

The Hopper Gibbons House, 339 West 29th Street, was a site of a “station” of the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves fleeing to Canada. The Hopper Gibbons House is named afterAbby Hopper Gibbons who, while living in the house, participated in the abolitionist movement and used her basement as a station in the Underground Railroad.
