If you don't want to read much: FINGER WEG! (Update from 04.06.2015: FINGER WEG!)
Whether you're old "Master of Magic" fans or just looking for a good 4X Game, do yourself a Favor and wait until the game is officially released-and then, wait until the first Reports about the Game have been released. Currently, what is offered here as a Game is a single Imposition. (Yes, also called "early access" BETA Version)
Graphic: The Graphics are certainly better than the Precursor that the Developers emulate, but this is also not Art compared to a Game released 20 Years ago. Unfortunately, we are in 2014 and the Graphics are simply not up-to-date. Despite the rather faint Graphics, the Image even jerks with a PC with a strong Graphics Card, a clear Sign of a (still?) moderate Code.
Game: To the Game itself, it can only be said that the old Mechanisms that have supplied Master of Magic have been taken up and have combined them with the Open Source Rules of the D20 System. In theory, that can be or become a really great Thing. In practice, though, the Game is still a long way from being finished.
The State of the Game so that I have not been able to start a single Game without having experienced a game crash after a few Rounds (if I came across Round 1). ALL the Playing Mechanisms are here at an early BETA stage. Considering that the Game should actually be released in Q2 2014, the State of the Game gives food for thought.
A few Examples that make it difficult to find positive Words for the Game here: 1.) you want to finish a Round, the Game freezes and you are allowed to kill the Process and restart it.
2.) One Gives a unit a moving-to-command and the Command is not implemented.
3.) the Game is only a few Rounds old, one has just built 2 Units and the first Base Buildings (which you need to have more Units in the Game at all), there is already a neutral Army with 4 Units running towards the City. You have 0 Chance of Game over.
4.) If you want to charm enemy Units, they are entitled to a Rescue Bill to avoid the Effect. The Rescue Throw almost always succeeds, which just frustrates in the Long run.
5.) If you want to interact with special Places on the Map, you first have to drag your Unit to this Place, then double-click on the Box with the left mouse button, then a Window with potential Enemies appears, then you click on "interact" and only then comes a Fight or a Result. Awkward and annoying with time.
6.) When I first dared to start a second City, various neutral (!) stood on the verge of Troops in front of it. I don't know yet where these neutral Units actually come from. The newly founded city was conquered by the Units. When I defeated the Units, it was not possible to take over the City.
This is not the Strain of "early access," where there are still a few Bugs and where you can play, but still lack Content. Here you give Money to a Company so that-at best fall-it develops the Game in the first place and also makes itself available free of charge as a BETA tester.
Why you built a new Breed (Orcs) into the Game with the last Update instead of taking care of the Content-related problem/bugs is not understandable to me. Because Bugs still have many things to do, just as all the Gameplay is still in great need to improve. To me, this so far stinks damn of a Rip-off Project where as much Money as possible is drawn until it doesn't go any further at some point. The Very fact that there were Kick-starter rounds for the Game 2 (once in England, once in the USA) is strange.
I was unfortunately recommended the Game by Steam and I didn't think in my Quest for a good 4X game and just read positive Reviews (why?). I can only lower my Thumb down here; At the moment, everything looks like you're just giving away your Money here.
Update from 04.06.2015: After a really long Period, I have now wanted to test Worlds of Magic again and was excited to see what has happened in the last Few weeks. The Answer is simple: More playable Races have been added, but the Game remains grotty.
The Graphics have improved slightly, or in the Colour Scheme of the World Map, but the Game still looks old and unfinished.
My Test Run looked like this: Construction Contract first Buildings, Research of the first Spell, Evocation of Skeletons to reinforce one's army. Round 7: Crash; Nothing can be done anymore.
So It sticks with it: If your Money is dear to you, please let it be. The Idea for WoM is great, the Implementation is unfortunately not worth the Money.
