Guide Aria on her journey in this vertical slice prototype of our Godot Action RPG.  With semi-randomized NPC spawns, random loot. inventory and equipment, combat and health, traps and more, this is a glimpse into the type of game we want to teach you to make.

Your Godot 4 Action RPG is an ambitious project - we want to teach you how to make a game like this using the upcoming version 4 of the Godot Game Engine, making assets in Blender and music in LMMS.

Patch Notes V 0.02:

  1. The options menu is now wired in.  Options are persistent between game sessions,
  2. Introducing the difficulty slider - this increases the chance of a skeleton spawning at a spawn point.  Please read the known issues below about this one!  There's an interesting bug we're aware of and working on.
  3. DungeonMart has acquired a plot in the dungeon in anticipation for buying and selling to plucky adventurers.  Please note that they're not open yet, but you can peek through the door.
  4. Goldie has arrived - our proof of concept boss.  right now this is a simple pallet swap, a particle effect and a ton of health points.  You might want the flaming demon axe to defeat Goldie.
  5. The menu screen now plays Mikey's Tavern music.  Please do not spill beer on the floor while quaffing.

Features in this prototype:

  • Semi randomized NPC spawns
  • Unique Boss
  • Persistent inventory with drag and drop functionality
  • Working equipment slots for weapons and potions
  • Two separate weapon styles
  • Working health and stamina systems.  If you run out of stamina you'll be exhausted and won't be able to sprint or attack until you recover.  Health will recover slowly over time if you're not wielding a weapon.
  • Randomized potion and book placement systems in world
  • Randomized contents in specific chests
  • An epic weapon that cannot appear through random generation and only appears in one specific crate
  • Working traps
  • Dodging to avoid damage

This is a vertical slice of the project, not a beta or polished game. There are some known issues:

  • BoneAttachments with weapons attached cause the game to lag.  In other words, NPCs and players that own a weapon (even if that weapon is not visible) slow the game down. The more enemies spawned, the greater this effect will be. On lower and mid-range machines, this will be quite noticeable.  if your game is running slowly, lowering the difficulty slider will help.  We have a plan to move away from bone attachments, but it's a pretty big change and will require a few days.  Or kill the skeletons, causing their weapons to vanish, which speeds things up nicely.
  • The current animations don't allow Aria to move and attack or move and sheathe/unsheathe her weapon at the same time.
  • The shop isn't there yet.
  • Not equipping a weapon and trying to attack that weapon does nothing.  This isn't technically a bug or an issue, but someone reported it as a bug because "I don't read notes" and writing "some people don't read" as a known issue felt mean.

  1. This prototype was built using placeholder animations, sounds and UI elements.  We will be redoing them for the courses. 
  2. Everything you see here is a work in progress.
  3. This was built with Godot 3.3.  We will be reworking it for Godot 4 when it;s released
