Even without mods the game is great; the most popular ones you can find in the workshop, my personal recommendation - Thrawn's Revenge: Imperial Civil War and Republic at War.

I think Empire at War is totally worth to play - if something goes wrong, you can request a refund. Try Battlefront Commander, Republic at War 1.2, Nojembre's Republic at War Submod. If you have a potent computer, try The Ultimate Galactic Conquest with the Consortium too.

Here’s how to fix the game if it crashes during the first load. Go to install folder and seek Commonredist/Directx. Locate the application file in there and run that.
If you want more spaceships, go install z3r0x's mod version 3.5 by stutpip123. It’ll add you The Eclipse and The Executioner.
