The Last Of Us review
Exceptional
by Julian Mitchell-Israel

Overall: 10/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Story: 10/10
Music: 10/10

Note: You’d think it would have a 9.5/10 based on the way I usually average my scores to find the overall rating. Despite this, I have elected to give it a full, perfect 10/10. Simply put, it is the greatest video game I have ever played, and if there is ever one to give perfect marks to this is it, even if it isn’t perfect in some individual aspect.

This game is a testament to what games can be. People often talk about how games have yet to develop into an "art form." Even if that were the case in the past, this game has proven that videogames have begun the journey into artistry. The Last of Us is a forceful exploration of guilt, the faults inherent to humanity, and faith in those around you. I've cried during video games before. Usually a stray tear for the death of a character I loved. But this game, not only once but three times, had me genuinely crying. And each time, it was for a different reason. I won't say more lest I spoil the game, but this is a must-play. You will come away shaken, and thankful that you played it. The storyline, the characters, and the mechanics are all phenomenal. The only reason it didn't get a full 10 stars from me is because, at certain points, there are moments that feel mildly repetitive in terms of actual gameplay. Despite this the game NEVER looses site of its strengths, and so the repetition becomes barely noticeable and the strength of the storyline pushes you through any moments where in another game you might get tired. Overall, however, the gameplay is still fun to play. The weapons switching mechanic, the crafting mechanic, and everything else is almost flawless in its execution and intuitive. Even the scenes with the "slow walk" common in many story-driven video games (for some reason your character must walk slowly towards the objective for dramatic effect) are well placed, and don't feel cliched. This game is a masterpiece, and I would not hesitate to rank it among the best games ever made. Play this, if it's the one game you ever play.

Just amazing. Finally got a Playstation, and after years of being excited about this, I finally got the chance to play it. It completely met my expectations. It's writing is about as good as it gets in games, and while I think it follows a few too many zombie tropes, the characters are good enough to overpower that. The sound design, the lighting, the handheld look of the cutscenes; it all works. Could play this five more times.

One of the best stories told in a video game. It's compelling and the voice acting is on point.

What can I say that every legitimate reviewer hasn't already said? This game defined marriage of story + gameplay.
You traverse through beautiful worlds with some of the best written characters you'll ever meet. Biggest problem is that the gameplay is mediocre at best, terrible at worst
Fantastic, haunting story. Like all of Naughty Dog's games - this almost played out like a movie. Can't wait to finally play TLOU 2 (when I have time)

Quite possibly one of the greatest games ever. It was like being in a movie.

An incredible journey as you, a grizzled broken man some 20 years after an outbreak, suddenly find yourself having to protect a 14 year old girl in a fractured world full of bandits and zombie-like creatures.

The story moments had such intense weight as each season progressed and the little conversation moments between them made it so real. Never have I been drawn so much into a world that I felt like I had a daughter. I was so over protective of Ellie. She would run off round corners and I'd be like DAMMIT girl, wait!

Stellar experience not to be missed

The game is so unbelievably good that a sequel was almost guaranteed as soon as it dropped. The characters and story intertwine with each other and the writing is simply top notch. You will care for the smallest side characters and want to know more about the main characters after it is finished. There are many themes that link throughout the story and symbolism too.
The gameplay is very good too, as it blends stealth, third person shooting and survival elements together. The gameplay really complements the story in a way due to how you have to conserve the limited materials you get. The enemy AI, although stupid on lower difficulties, is smart on the hardest difficulty and will try to flank you or force you out of a safe space so that the other enemies can shoot you. I often found enemies sneaking up to me and grabbing me so that their ally could shoot or punch me, which I thought was an interesting thing they did.
The world design and environmental design is top notch. You'll come across areas that have brilliant detail and will find a lot of collectibles hidden in smart areas that provide extra detail and exposition into the world.
All in all, this game is a must-play for anyone into interesting story-based games.

Having gone through The Last of Us for the now 3rd time after not playing it since about the time it came out originally and because of excitement for 2's release. I love this game with all of my heart.

While I think gameplay wise it starts pretty rough honestly though with a great story and story setup, the gameplay sections get and feel so much better once you hit the end of summer/beginning of fall.

The characters feel like living breathing people, the gameplay feels aggressive and heavy, making sure every bullet you have counts to the very end. The violence is brutal and attention grabbing in a pretty disturbing way.

Winter especially being the gameplay highlight.

The music is haunting in its own way, never dominating the situation more then it needs to but there when appropriate for the scene and extremely fitting.

The acting is top notch and everyone brings their a-game to this thing.

And the ambiguity of the ending is so good, leaving the player with a lot to process and chew on as the credits roll.

Just such a phenomonal game and I can't wait for 2.

The beginning was very slow and boring; it was hard for me to get into it (this was my 3rd try to get into it). But halfway through the game, it started to get really good, I got used to the clunky shooting mechanics, and the story got interesting. Personally I don't get why this game is for many people the game of the decade, it's good, but not GOTD worthy.

Played on a PS4 Pro.
