The Gunk is a pleasant but lightweight sci-fi adventure that lacks lasting impact. The core mechanic—sucking up a parasitic substance—is satisfying short-term but lacks depth and variety. The visual style is charming, the protagonists are endearing, and the soundtrack is atmospheric. But the level design is too linear, the runtime is short (4-5 hours), and the mechanics never meaningfully evolve. It's a perfectly acceptable, no-frills game for a relaxed evening, but compared to Image & Form's SteamWorld series, it's a minor work in a far more inspired discography. A nice but forgettable experience.
