Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut review
by Dima064

Completed as of writing this review: 100% Save File Slot (Not all achievements).

As a first Metroidvania game (speaking from experience) don't start with this. Go play Pirate's Curse instead. But as a Shantae game? It's a fun and interesting experience! I would say the game is a bit dated since even Director's Cut is in 4:3 Aspect Ratio and the transformation can be really annoying to get used to, but it's also worth your time. Though it's recommended to just complete the main objective first, then go for achievements. Sometimes it can be a chore to look around since this game doesn't have a fully-implemented map (only for outside in the Director's Cut). So yeah, if you want to play a Shantae game - go for it, but only if you are ready to confuse yourself sometimes.

As half of Dschini Shantae, One protects Scuttle Town from the Pirate Risky Boots, where you take on Magical Animal Shapes via belly dances to explore the Game world for Heart Containers, jewels (the Currency), magic Jam (!) and the wider Plot. The Jam serves as a Bonus Currency for Buying active Attack Spells and passive Talent. Shantae: Risky's Revenge is a beautiful and exceedingly likeable platformer Metroidvania with an unused oriental setting and Title Heroine and suitable for Players of all Ages. Only the short Playing Time can be seen as Malus. Because although you play a Metroidvania, with a Focus on Exploring and Returning to old Areas with new Abilities, the Game world with a total of 3 Dungeons, 3 Shapes and 4 Areas is quite limited. My first Pass took just under 6 hours (100% of all Equipment collected) and the Second Already only 3 (60% of all Equipment collected) Fortunately, the Level of difficulty is very pleasant, gradually increases and always remains fair. Alternatively, there's the optional "Hard Fashion." Still, experienced Players could be potentially underwhelmed. For £10, though, I think that's okay. It's straightforward, just so demand, has a wonderfully sympathetic Soundtrack and Scenario and invites you to Enjoy. It is suitable for speedness and the Achievements suggest some real Challenges with which you can have your Fun more often. But let's face it: As a Belly Dancer, who hasn't always wanted to smash his Braid so hard against snake monsters until they shatter Into dozens of bones and finally swing their Hips under the Sun so you can hop off it as Monkeys?

Shantae: Risky's Revenge was the first Shantae part I got myself. However, after finding out that this Part is the second Part in the Series, I interrupted this Game for the time being to play the first Part. Unfortunately, this one is not available on Steam, as the first Part originally came out for the Game Boy Color. This Game is available in the Nintendo E-store, though, but enough of it. I will compare this Part with his Predecessor in this Review. The second Part of the Series originally came out for Nintendo DS, so there's already a little Time between those Parts. Risky's Revenge has logically Experienced some Graphics Enhancements and the Gameplay has been adjusted. The Gameplay has become much more fluid and the Inventory has also been simplified so that you can switch between items faster. In order to transform oneself, you no longer have to enter Shortcuts, but let go of the Dance from a certain Sequence in order to carry out the respective Transformation. Warping between worlds has also been simplified by no longer having to collect four "Slods" in each Dungeon, but you activate a Statue and can teleport to already activated statues. It wasn't very elaborate to find the "Squids," but that makes this Game more enjoyable. In addition, the Use of Spells has been changed. You no longer have a direct Number of Spells, but you have to buy a Spell to use it. When you use a Spell, the Magic Bar decreases and the Spell can be used until the Magiel Bar is used up. But the Spell does not disappear when the Groin is used up, but only magic is needed again. You can also improve your Spells in the Shop, but these Improvements require not only the normal Cost but also "Magic Jam," which you can find in different Places during the course of the Game. I like this Change very much because I used magic less in the first Part, as I needed the Money more for Potions. On the Whole, many Changes in this Game are very enjoyable and greatly improve the Gameplay. I recommend this Game to anyone who has already played the first Shantae Part or the third Part and also likes the People who like Metroidvania. Now it's Time for me to play the third Part as well.
