[9/10] The only problem I had with The Alters was the somewhat slow-paced introduction. The game takes its time to pick up speed and only really starts to show its claws halfway through the first act. The longer you play, the more it draws you in, which is interesting because usually, it's the other way around — the longer we play, the more games tend to push us away rather than pull us in. The Alters is different; it constantly offers something new, and even if it doesn’t for a while, the number of tasks to complete and the variety of problems the characters face ensure that you won’t get bored and will always be facing tough decisions at the end of each in-game day. That’s because the game only saves when you start a new day, but there’s always something to do, and you won’t want to leave it for the next gaming session. The masters at 11 Bit Studios have designed this very cleverly, and I’m genuinely pleased with virtually every moment I’ve spent with the game.
