Dragon Quest VII Reimagined isn't just a good remake: it's a genuine love letter to one of the most underrated JRPGs ever made. The adventure is deep, moving, and packed with narrative richness rarely matched, supported by classic gameplay elevated by modern touches like the mount system and adjustable difficulty. Akira Toriyama's influence is everywhere, giving the experience a palpable energy, while the sound design frequently reaches artistic heights. The stunning diorama-like visuals make the world feel hand-crafted and unique.
The story has been streamlined without losing its soul, the time-hopping between past and present islands is a treat, and the overhauled combat (dual vocations, vocational perks, monster summoning) is dynamic and satisfying. The adjustable difficulty is a godsend for series veterans who want a challenge. No remake is perfect – a few islands were cut, the middle can drag slightly, and some companions are abrasive – but none of that spoils the experience. After dozens of hours saving the world across time, one certainty remains: this is an absolute essential for any JRPG fan. Square Enix and Armor Project made a timeless classic even more special. An essential, period.
