Like a Dragon: Ishin! is one of those games that surprises you with its richness and sincerity. Sakamoto Ryoma's story is a true delight from start to finish — dense, heartfelt, emotional, funny, carried by writing that treats its characters with genuine respect. You feel the betrayals and victories with rare intensity. The gameplay shows a few age-related wrinkles, but once you invest in it, it reveals a depth and efficiency that become frankly addictive. The feudal Japan recreated here is a permanent invitation to explore, make improbable encounters, and lose yourself in completely deranged side quests while following a gripping main plot.
The combat system offers four distinct styles (Swordsman, Gunman, Brawler, Wild Dancer) that you can upgrade independently and switch mid-battle. Once you unlock advanced techniques, the initial stiffness disappears. Boss fights are demanding but fair. The Dragon Engine remake looks polished, runs smoothly, and the Japanese voice acting is flawless. The soundtrack blends traditional shamisen with epic orchestrations.
Minor flaws: some stiff animations, a slightly austere start, a few mid-game pacing slowdowns, and some repetitive side quests. None of this spoils the experience.
That's the magic of RGG Studio: turning a historical setting into a living, human, unforgettable playground. A game to have in your library without the slightest hesitation.
