Atari 8-bit family is a series of home computers made by Atari. The series included 8 computer models which shared practically the same hardware and varied mostly in design and packaging: 400, 800, 1200XL, 600XL, 800XL, 65XE, 130XE, and 800XE. Due to its advanced graphics and sound capabilities, gaming was a major draw on the platform. The computers had a wide range of peripherals that used the Atari SIO serial bus system. They included disk drives, printers, modems, interface modules, and program recorders among others.
Unlike Atari game consoles, the Atari 8-bit computers focused less on arcade-style games and offered a wide range of titles in various genres. Some of the most popular and well-received games include Boulder Dash, Yoomp!, Dropzone, Rainbow Walker and Encounter. However, the most popular title for the system was Star Raiders which was considered to be the series’ killer app concerning gaming.
