Marvel’s Avengers reviews and comments

I was hyped for 'Marvel's Avengers' as soon as I saw the teaser trailer at E3 2019. I've been a moderate fan of the Marvel comics ever since I can remember, and although I greatly prefer DC at this point, I still appreciate the universe Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created.

I'll be honest, though I have somewhat of a hot take here - I enjoyed this game a lot. Now, it wasn't 'Spider-Man PS4' or anything, but it was really good for what it set out to be.

For starters, I thought M.O.D.O.K was a well-written character here and he always seemed in control of the situation (a trope I love to see - if done well). I also thought the relationship between Bruce Banner (The Hulk) and Tony Stark (Iron Man) was exceptional, partly due to the acting performances of Troy Baker (Banner) and Nolan North (Stark). Additionally, the gameplay was beyond satisfactory. Thor was my personal favorite to play, but each character felt unique and powerful in their own right.

Now, after hearing my brief review, you may be wondering why I only rated it a "Meh" instead of something higher. Let me explain: this is solely due to my personal recommendation of whether or not you should pick it up. I think, truthfully, that your money can probably be spent better elsewhere. That's not to say that 'Marvel's Avengers' was a bad game by any means, but the price you pay doesn't exactly equal the experience you get out of it. If you can find this game for pretty cheap (or even free on GamePass, for example) then I definitely recommend you give it a chance! The campaign is really solid (as well as the DLC for Hawkeye, Black Panther, etc.), but the multiplayer game mode leaves a lot to be desired.

I fully and whole-heartedly recommend the single player campaign and only the single player campaign.
Concise Review:

Story is fine. Missions are boring and repetitive in structure. Super generic loot system. Decent looking skill tree that misses its potential due to boring missions. The highlight is they do a good job of making the hero’s feels different and unique. But once that initial discovery period wears off the enjoyment falls off dramatically.

Journal Style Review:

Opening cut scenes and the audio is way off haha. Like a few seconds off. Great start. Performance aside, the A-day intro wasn’t bad. The Kamala intro is slow though. Too many cut scenes and walking.

The combat feels like it’s a decade or so old. That’s my first impression with the hulk and stretchy girl. I don’t think the combat is bad. It’s kind of simple though.

Ironman is my favourite of the first three. I had a fun time learning his moves and getting a feel for how he plays. The combat looks nice.

Graphics are pretty good. I’m playing on performance mode and it is smooth and still nice looking. The missions are generic so far but the world looks decent and the combat has been fun in a turn off your brain kind of way.

The gear upgrades couldn’t be more boring. I don’t think I’m going to do any of the “destiny” style progression. I’ll beat the campaign and unique  missions, and we will see if I do anything else. I like the skill point upgrades. Just the gear has nothing to it at all.

Black widow is also fun. They do a good job of making the different heroes feel unique. That’s so far the strongest part of the game. No hero feels as good as say Spider-Man or Batman but for a collection of heroes they do feel good and more than just a different skin.

I expected this game to be worse. It isn’t bad. It just isn’t special and it should be better given the IP. Some structure and game design decisions are dumb. But the look, feel and even the story isn’t bad so far. The story tries a bit too hard occasionally but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.

I am getting bored pretty quick. I’m like 70% done the first campaign. Its sort of fun but after the initial fun of testing out the new heroes it’s not that fun. There are these gigantic skill trees but I’m never going to get close to finishing any of. I’d have to do so many repetitive missions and I just can’t see it happening.

Then I play a couple of the Captain America missions while stoned and I like it again. Not amazing but not boring either. I’m saving this game for stoned nights from now. It’s the best way to play it.

I beat the first campaign. Ending was fine. I plan to keep playing the other campaigns at some point but I haven’t been drawn it. I feel like I’m pretty done with the game.

Too many good new games came out. I’m down wasting time on this. Maybe I come back in the future but I doubt it.

Current Score: B

The campaign's story was okay but gameplay was generic and rather boring. Run to a point. Fight. Repeat. Over and over and over again.
