Starwhal is a small arcade game that is played alone (some modes only) or in Coop (from 2 to 4 players) and that allows to spend a few moments fun between friends.
It's simple: you are in command of a narwhal, a kind of sea Unicorn, and you have to break the hearts of other players using your horn. Easy to say because your narwhal will not be so docile and master his travels will be a whole different story but this is the main asset of the game. All the fun of the game stems from the imprecise and grotesque movements of your pet. You will swiping, slipping, daring, falling and laughing well!
So let's go through the different game modes in review. There are 4 game modes in cooperation for which you can set options (number of cores per player, game time, Scrum mode or team if you are more than 2 or even number of laps... etc): Classic: a mode of combat where you will have to break the heart of your opponent (what cruelty!).
Score: break as much hearts as possible in an allotted time. This mode is somewhat redundant compared to the classic mode, the only difference is that you do not die.
Zones: capture zones.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=530712882 the zones mode brings a bit of renewal and asks players to capture certain bubbles by touching their Center with the Horn of the narwhal. Every second during which an area is kept will climb the counter and once the score set at the beginning of the game reaches you win! In addition, if you capture 2 zones the score will climb 2 times faster.
Heart thief: steal the heart and keep it until you reach the score previously set. A heart is somewhere on the level and it will be stealing it while the other players will do anything to get it back. If you set the score to 30 and you keep the heart in your possession for 30 seconds, you win!
Solo, there are only 2 modes whose interest is rather limited. You will be able to adjust the difficulty for these modes: targets: drill all targets as quickly as possible.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=530791183 obstacles: avoid obstacles and reach the end of the level. A race mode for scoring enthusiasts. You can even see the "ghosts" of the players you have as a friend on steam (if you cross me you'll laugh I warn you!)
The levels are varied in terms of colors as well as level design. On some levels you will have lava that will lower your score if you get stuck there, moving platforms or wind that will propel you forward (story to make the game even less easy to control). You have at your disposal 5 worlds each composed of 6 playable levels with each mode.
The graphics are made in a cute and funny style for our narwhals that we can personalize (color, head and body) but at the level of the background is something else... Why have you put images (mostly) austere that create a gap between the narwhals that are agitated in the foreground? Personally I think it's a design error but it only commits me.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=530471760 also, the music of the game is good, training, it adds a retro arcade side that sticks perfectly to this type of game.
Starwhal is played locally with joysticks or a keyboard, there is no online multiplayer mode however, which can put off many players who do not necessarily have a gamer friend on hand.
In the end I do not hide that Starwhal is a game that we quickly went around but it does not take away the fact that it is fun and that is the kind of game ideal for an evening between friends gamers!
