About

Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor - Alexis Carrel
This is the story of Jan Dolski, a simple worker facing circumstances that lead him to a life-changing crossroads. Crash landing on a distant planet, stranded and alone, Jan finds himself in a daunting life and death situation. His only hope for survival is to bring helping hands on board. Not yet understanding the weight of his choice, Jan must create alternate versions of himself if he is to forge ahead: the alters.
The Alters is a game about life-changing moments. Those binary decisions that happen in nanoseconds, but have influence over your entire life. It is about looking into yourself, into your past, and discovering that you are who you are as a sum of those numerous choices. And when you do that a fundamental question arises: WHAT IF…?
What If I altered my life? What if I took a different path? Who would I be? What would I say to a different me? What could I learn if I talked to my altered selves? What if I talk to my many selves at once?! What if…?
Forged in the spirit of meaningful entertainment: a unique philosophy of creation by the award-winning team, the makers of This War of Mine and Frostpunk.

The Alters reviews and comments

It was a difficult day. Half of my alters were stressed, and the other half were starting to feel rebellious. We had just survived another magnetic storm, but only just.

Realizing that a mutiny would end us, I knew that improving morale needed to be prioritized over everything else. So, my alters and I gathered 'round to watch a movie.

That's when I fell in love with this game. We watched, drank beer, my alters made some snarky comments a la Mystery Science Theater 3000.

And you know what? The movie was actually wonderful!
Except some minor bugs and terrible perfomance, it is an incredible game.

Perfect emergence of story and gameplay.

Awesome and fun to play, would do it again!

(Playable on SteamDeck, but looks like shit)
[9/10] The only problem I had with The Alters was the somewhat slow-paced introduction. The game takes its time to pick up speed and only really starts to show its claws halfway through the first act. The longer you play, the more it draws you in, which is interesting because usually, it's the other way around — the longer we play, the more games tend to push us away rather than pull us in. The Alters is different; it constantly offers something new, and even if it doesn’t for a while, the number of tasks to complete and the variety of problems the characters face ensure that you won’t get bored and will always be facing tough decisions at the end of each in-game day. That’s because the game only saves when you start a new day, but there’s always something to do, and you won’t want to leave it for the next gaming session. The masters at 11 Bit Studios have designed this very cleverly, and I’m genuinely pleased with virtually every moment I’ve spent with the game.
