Unhack 2 review
Meh
by Mia Blais-Côté

The sequel to Unhack, which leaves me quite mixed.
 The plusses:
+ The art is much better.
+ The soundtrack is just as good.
 The minuses:
 - There's no more dubbing for the characters. I loved hearing Weedy and company speak in Unhack 1.
 - The story, as a follow-up to the first game, disappointed me.
 - There's a mini-game, but since it doesn't "fit" as well into the story, its purpose becomes null and void.

When I heared Unhack was getting a second game I was hyped as hell to play it, since I enjoyed the first game a lot. After waiting an excruciatingly long time it´s finally here! What changed compared to the first game, what stayed the same? Let´s find out! The first Unhack was a mix of Visual Novel and the hacking/puzzle minigames. The story and conversations between the characters were explained while moving along with your cursor icon. Although it was a unique way of storytelling it slowed down the hacking part if you didn´t want to miss anything. I didn´t mind back then and I don´t mind now since the story and characters were always the focus for me. IF you played the first game you´re in for a huge change since the story plays a much more prominent role now. The hacking events still made it in the game, but the conversations no longer go on while your playing them which makes for a much better narrative flow. After the puzzle minigame everything will continue as before. You can even skip the minigames if you don´t want to play them or got stuck with trying to solve them. That said, I can´t say that much about the story without spoiling it, which would be a shame. It takes place four years after the events of the first game and you´ll meet a lot of new characters as well as old favorites. But is the story any good? Hell yeah! While I really really liked the first game, Unhack 2 just feels a lot more massive! The sheer scope and size of what is happening feels a lot different, it feels like there is always something at stake here and that made for quite many touching scenes and moments. The topics chosen are pretty heavy stuff like how far someone is willing to go to achieve their goals and the meaning of life or rather what defines someone or something as being alive. Like in the first game Unhack 2 handles these topics with ease while not picking a side, but rather showing what the extremes could lead to. What drived the point home for me as well were of course the characters. I just loved the original cast! Weedy, (Miss) Debug, A² and the Unhacker/Creator were all really likeable characters, even with their flaws as a person each of them had. Debug is one of my favorite characters ever and I really couldn´t wait for her to make an appearance in Unhack 2! The only thing I really missed was the voice acting, since it was awesome in Unhack and matched each character perfectly. Like I said you´ll meet a lot characters from the first game, but the story will mainly center around new characters like Program X and Neonya. I liked the new characters as well and together with the original cast it made for an irresistible mix. At the end I just want to say how much I loved the story and characters which made for such a grand experience and a perfect game at that. To the rest I can just say: If you don´t mind that the story takes the lead in this game and not the puzzle games you´ll have a really good time here.
