I've been really fascinated by the immersive sim genre recently and the legacy of these games and emergent gameplay as a whole, and this game is one of the first recent (if nearly 10 years old is recent in everyone's opinion) games in the genre I've played. Most of the time, I feel as though these games aren't able to touch the freedom and simplicity of Deus Ex and Thief, even games within their own franchise, but Dishonored is a beautiful example of a studio studying the past and learning from their experiences and the experiences of others. It's one of the first modern immersive sims (not that it is a genre suffering from overabundance) that feels like a true step forward from the 90s PC classics and it truly never gets old with the replayability and branching strategies.
